Thousands Seek Aristide's Return to Haiti
Thousands of demonstrators demanding the return of ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide marched to Haiti's National Palace on Saturday, pushing past riot police in a dramatic show of support for the exiled former leader.

Chants of ``Aristide or death!'' and ``Aristide's blood is our blood!'' rang out as a crush of demonstrators pressed against a line of national police, who eventually allowed some 3,000 protesters to fill the street outside the palace.

The march coincided with Aristide's 53rd birthday and marked the largest display of support in months for the deposed leader, who fled Haiti in February 2004 amid a violent uprising and has been living in South Africa.

Helmeted police wielding batons and riot shields formed a human chain to keep protesters from approaching the whitewashed National Palace, President Rene Preval's official residence, which was guarded by dozens of U.N. peacekeepers in armored cars.

WHILE I SIT HERE TRYING TO THINK OF THINGS TO SAY

SOMEONE LIES BLEEDING IN A FIELD SOMEWHERE

SO IT WOULD SEEM WE'VE STILL GOT A LONG LONG WAY TO GO

I'VE SEEN ALL I WANNA SEE TODAY

WHILE I SIT HERE TRYING TO MOVE YOU ANYWAY I CAN

SOMEONE'S SON LIES DEAD IN A GUTTER SOMEWHERE

AND IT WOULD SEEM THAT WE'VE GOT A LONG LONG WAY TO GO

BUT I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE

SWITCH IT OFF IT WILL GO AWAY

TURN IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO

SWITCH IT OFF OR LOOK AWAY

WHILE I SIT AND WE TALK AND TALK AND WE TALK SOME MORE

SOMEONE'S LOVED ONE'S HEART STOPS BEATING IN A STREET SOMEWHERE

SO IT WOULD SEEM WE'VE STILL GOT A LONG LONG WAY TO GO, I KNOW

I'VE HEARD ALL I WANNA HEAR TODAY

TURN IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO (TURN IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO)

SWITCH IT OFF IT WILL GO AWAY (SWITCH IT OFF IT WILL GO AWAY)

TURN IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO (TURN IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO)

SWITCH IT OFF OR LOOK AWAY (SWITCH IT OFF OR LOOK AWAY)

SWITCH IT OFF

SWITCH IT OFF

SWITCH IT OFF

SWITCH IT OFF

SWITCH IT OFF

TURN IT OFF

6. Thank you for the very real reminder.
It's dead wrong to forget what Bush has done to Haiti. No one could be more vicious and underhanded.

4. This coup occurred in the Western hemisphere.

there are so many lies about this situation.

my take; when Aristede refused to join the IMF and plunge Haiti into deeper economic slavery, they 'roved' him.

5. You're right. They roved him like he'd never been roved before.
He was also used as the warning to this hemisphere, and it appears there are others who are purposely not heeding it now in other countries, and more power them.

He refused to sell his country into bondage.

It's a shame when a huge country won't respect the elections of weaker countries and simply trashes them. Of course you have to consider the fact Bush and his belligerent Republicans didn't respect the election of this country, either!

8. Sad but true.
News reports concerning the plight of Haitians are virtually non-existent and all the while this was going on, there was not a peep from a congressional member or senator about this travesty.

Sad, but true.

9. Did not "flee", and it was NOT a "violent uprising".
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 09:45 PM by bvar22
What occurred was a violent overthrow of the legitimate government led by guerrilla troops (invaders) from the Dominican Republic who were armed and trained by the bush* administration.

>>>Aristide ..., who fled Haiti in February 2004 amid a violent uprising and has been living in South Africa. <<<

I thought the exact same thing. You don't "flee" when the US/CIA shows up in the middle of a Saturday night and whisks you away under force flying you on a private unmarked CIA-charted jet out of the country imprisoning you in a palace in the Cental Africa Republic. Thereafter, preventing and even forbidding your return.

This, ... after they armed the criminal gang to rove the countyside and kill people.

It's also known as another, in the long list, of the CIA overthrowing democratically-elected governments. Some call it a coup.
