Abortion Backers, Foes Square Off in Miss.

JACKSON, Miss. -- Hundreds of abortion rights advocates and anti-abortion protesters
squared off in a contentious rally Saturday with both sides proclaiming Mississippi
a new key battleground state in the fight over Roe v. Wade.

The National Organization for Women and other abortion rights groups gathered at a park
in downtown Jackson across from the governor's mansion, vowing to counter an eight-day
rally by the national anti-abortion group, Operation Save America.

Operation Save America is holding rallies across Jackson in an effort to force the closure
of Mississippi's only abortion clinic _ a move NOW and abortion rights advocates say would
chip away at Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortions.

A bomb threat halted the rally, leading to angry exchanges between the groups. The Jackson
Police Department cleared the park and blew up a package found by a bomb squad. Officers
would not say what the package contained.

Interesting fact-Mississippi's only abortion clinic used to be right next to this church, though that particular church never protested it.

4. i was standing on the enbankment across the street in JACKSON,MISSISSIPPI

when JAMES MEREDITH was denied access to (OLE MISS?) by then GOV. ROSS BARNETT ...As he exited the building surrounded by the people who were protecting him, there was a round of applaused extended to him by a very few white supporters standing on that enbankment that day, icluding a couple of Catholic priests from the Chancery Office not far away. He was also booed by many hundred othe white people who were standing there. Seems Mississippi has regressed back to those times though the issue may be a different one this time...and who knows, given the neocon-ism of haley barbour, mississippians may be faced all over again with that black/white racial divide of long ago. i pray not.
