Israel tightens noose around Lebanon
-snip-
Trying to defuse the violence, which began when Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in a cross-border raid, Lebanon's prime minister indicated he might send his army to take control of southern Lebanon from Hezbollah — a move that might risk civil war.

In a more ominous sign that the struggle could spread, Israel accused Iran of helping launch a missile that damaged an Israeli warship, a charge both Hezbollah and Iran denied.

1. And W warned Syria
What a mess. One thing for sure. Not one more dollar should be given to Israel. They wanted war, they got it. Let them pay for it.

13. It does look rather opportunistic
I mean, in a violent conflict spanning decades and involving the loss of thousands of lives, using the capture of a single soldier as the justification for a sudden escalation to full blown invasion makes about as much sense as my claiming that your dog pooping in my back yard warrants my nuking your house. If Israel's response had been limited and proportionate, that would be one thing. But rolling out the tanks, gunships, artillery, and infantry columns for a rescue mission? Please, this obviously has nothing to do with getting back their lost soldier anymore. So if the alleged justification is bogus, then what other conclusion can one reach regarding their invasion other than that, for whatever sane or insane reason, they evidently did want to escalate and were looking for an opportunity to accomplish that end?

2. bush's actions at the security council proved his true intent
to the world. and putin gave him the slapdown about his plans to use the un to attack iran. bush has dug himself a nice big hole, so is using this manufactured crisis as a way to war. this immediate cry of 'IRAN!' as the villain is sooo transparent.

Israel Widens Scope of Attacks Across Lebanon
By GREG MYRE

METULA, Israel, Sunday, July 16 — Expanding the reach of its airstrikes, Israel on Saturday hit coastal radar installations in northern Lebanon that it said were targeting its warships and early Sunday bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Israel also struck roads in Lebanon’s north and east on Saturday, with one attack killing at least 16 civilians, most of them children. At the same time, Hezbollah forces continued their rocket barrage into northern Israel, striking the resort city of Tiberias for the first time.

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Airstrikes reduced entire apartment buildings to rubble
and knocked out electricity in swaths of the Lebanese capital Sunday as Israel
dramatically escalated the ferocity of its campaign after Hezbollah rockets hit
the northern city of Haifa.

Before the attack on Haifa, Israel had already unleashed its worst bombardment
yet in southern Beirut, a teeming Shiite districts where Hezbollah has its
headquarters. A series of 18 explosions rocked the city before sunrise.

The airstrikes started again soon after the Haifa attack, which killed at least
eight people.

Beirut, a city of 1.5 million people, was emptying as residents fled to the
relative safety of the mountains and the eastern Bekaa Valley - though in the
past 24 hours Israel expanded its strikes to the entire country. Police said 130
people, almost all civilians, have died in Lebanon in the five-day Israeli
onslaught. In Israel, 23 have died.

15. Funny because what King Hussein did
when it wanted to get rid of the bomb-throwing PLO was to send their leadership to islands in the Mediterranean. They sure as hell didn't want them in their country.

BTW, what ever happened to Trans-Jordan? Wasn't that supposed to be the Palestinian State?
