JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A powerful earthquake sent a six-foot-high tsunami crashing
into a beach resort on Indonesia's Java island Monday, damaging hotels and sending boats
smashing into houses, a witness told a local radio station.

People fled to a local hill to escape the wave on Pangandaran beach in west Java, a witness
named Teti told el-Shinta radio station.

"All the houses are destroyed along the beach," she said.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

Nine people dead in West Java's southern coast after tsunami

BANDUNG (Antara): Nine people are reportedly dead in West Java province Monday after an earthquake-triggered tsunami swept the province's southern coast.

Five people were found dead in Cipatujah beach in Tasikmalaya regency while another four were found in Pangandaran seaside resort, Ciamis regency.

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency office in Bandung said the 6.8-magnitude was centered some 33 kilometers below the Indian Ocean.

The U.S. Geology Survey, however, recorded the quake at 7.2 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter below the Indian Ocean, some 240 kilometers south of the beach, according to AP.

Death Toll Up to 47 in Indonesia Tsunami

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A powerful earthquake sent a 6-foot-high tsunami crashing
into beach resorts on Indonesia's Java island Monday, killing at least 47 people and
leaving scores missing and sending thousands fleeing to higher ground, officials and
witnesses said.

Regional agencies had issued bulletins that the 7.7-magnitude undersea earthquake was
strong enough to send a killer wave steaming toward the country worst hit by the 2004
tsunami, but they did not reach the victims because the island has no warning system.

The hardest-hit area appeared to be Pangandaran, an idyllic beach resort long popular
with local and foreign tourists, where witnesses said people shouted "Tsunami! Tsunami!"
and climbed trees or crowded inland mosques as the wave approached.

23. UPDATE: At least 67 dead, 70 missing in Indonesian tsunami (AFP)

At least 67 dead, 70 missing in Indonesian tsunami

17/07/2006 16h28

JAKARTA (AFP) - At least 67 people have been killed and 70 others reported missing after a tsunami smashed into the south of Indonesia's Java island following an undersea earthquake, local television reported.

Thirty-seven of the dead were from the worst-hit Pangandaran coast in West Java, Metro TV reported, without naming sources. The remainder of the dead were from several coastal towns in West and Central Java. Fifteen of those missing were inmates on the Nusakambangan prison island near Pangandaran, the network said on Monday.

After a strong 7.7-magnitude quake convulsed the seabed off Java's south coast, waves up to three metres (10 feet) high wrecked buildings and sent boats crashing ashore, prompting thousands of residents to flee in panic.

"The situation is almost similar to Aceh," Rudi Supriatna Bahro told Metro TV from the West Java province's Pangandaran coast, referring to the Indonesian province where 168,000 people were killed in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.

CIAMIS, Indonesia - An earthquake sent a tsunami crashing into beach resorts on Java island Monday, killing at least 86 people, leaving scores missing and sending thousands fleeing in an area spared by the devastating Asian tsunami of 2004, officials, witnesses and media reports said.

Regional bulletins that the 7.7-magnitude undersea earthquake was strong enough to create a killer wave did not reach the victims, because Indonesia's main island has no tsunami warning system.

Thousands fled to higher ground along a 110-mile stretch of the densely populated island's southern coast. The hardest-hit area appeared to be Pangandaran, an idyllic beach resort popular with tourists. Witnesses there said people shouted "
Tsunami! Tsunami!" and climbed trees or crowded into inland mosques as the wave approached.

The Indonesian Red Cross, police and district officials said at least 82 people were killed, most in Pangandaran and nearby Cilacap. El-Shinta radio reported four other deaths.

"We are still evacuating areas and cross-checking data," Red Cross official Arifin Muhadi told The Associated Press. He said 77 people were missing.

At least one Swedish tourist at Pangandaran was being treated for injuries at a hospital and his two sons, 5 and 10, were missing, said Jan Janonius, a Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesman.

A witness told el-Shinta he saw the ocean withdraw 1,500 feet from the beach a half-hour before the powerful wave smashed ashore, a typical phenomenon before a tsunami.

"I could see fish jumping around on the ocean floor," Miswan said. "Later I saw a wave like a black wall."

29. those poor people over there
its just like they can't catch a break. This is one of the things as a country we should be doing is help protect people in the world who can't protect themselves. They need to expand the tsunami warning system in the pacific to the indiana ocean. Not only to protect people over there as a humanitarian issue, but also for tourists all over the world. Most of the world needs to participate in this.
