Democrat leads in Minn. Senate poll
MINNEAPOLIS - Democrat Amy Klobuchar holds a strong lead over Republican Rep. Mark Kennedy (news, bio, voting record) in the latest Senate poll in Minnesota.

The Star Tribune Minnesota Poll showed Klobuchar with 50 percent of likely voters' support compared to 31 percent for Kennedy. The two are vying for the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Mark Dayton (news, bio, voting record), who is retiring after one term.

The poll was based on a survey of 813 adults statewide July 6-11. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Both candidates did well with voters from their own parties, but the poll showed moderates and independents leaning heavily toward Klobuchar. Even among conservatives she drew 23 percent, compared to 55 percent for Kennedy.

3. The R is Minnesota's own version of Coulter
Michele Bachman who is running on anti-gay platform.

The D is Patty Wetterling http://www.pattywetterling.com/

Could be an uphill battle since this is an R district but Cheney has already been here to raise funds for Bachman.

Still, miracles could happen. Some of us have donated to Wetterling, even though we are out of her district because the thought of the state being represented by Bachman is revolting, indeed.

2. That sort of ignored Ford Bell
Bell, the Russ Feingold-like candidate has also been polling very strongly against Kennedy and I think people would find him a much more galvanizing speaker than Amy who repeats all the DSCC talking points that Schumer can pump into her head (not to mention she changes positions on her issues constantly).

11. Ford Bell dropped out of the race last week
http://www.hometownsource.com/capitol/2006/July/12candidatebell.html

excerpt:

Democrat Ford Bell has dropped out of the U.S. Senate race, endorsing Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar for the spot he sought for 15 months.

snip

Although Bell — a veterinarian and educator — believes he would have won 30 percent of the delegate vote at the recent DFL State Convention, he explained at a Capitol press conference on Tuesday (July 11) that he lacked sufficient campaign funding to mount an effective primary election challenge.

Another one bites the dust. Thanks Schumer! I love it when Washington DLC cronies pick our candidates! :sarcasm:

4. I wonder why Mark Dayton is retiring after only
one term or is there a story behind him retiring.

13. Shortly after the invasion of Iraq, he took the senate floor ,telling
**** to stop lying to the American people. Soon after that he announced that he was not running for reelection, and he toned down his rhetoric against ****. It looks like they have something on him.

5. MPR said this morning
That Klobuchar was not doing as well with people under 25, what the hell is up with that? What could young people see in the waste of space that is Mark Kennedy?

7. I also saw that in the poll.
Kennedy is most popular with younger Minnesotans -- he leads Klobuchar 63 to 16 percent among those under age 25 -- and with Republicans, but he is behind in nearly every other category the July 6-11 poll measured.

I am just above that age group, and I see many more conservative youth than not. There were threads on reasons why youth are more conservative this past weekend. Part of it is a "coolness" factor, part of it is following their parents, and some is actually rebelling from their parents.

9. Thanks, I'll have to look at those threads,
because I don't see how conservatives could be seen as "cool", eeek!

8. Klobuchar is ahead in the polls, therefore she will lose
I wish I didn't live in a Totalitarian Nation where things like this regularly came true, and always to the benefit of THE PARTY.

10. Not always true, espically in Minnesota
While things will get really dirty in the media come fall, Minnesota still has a mandatory paper-only rule across the state. No Diebold electronic voting games for us. While some MN GOP wingnuts are trying to change this rule, the vast majority of the state prefers voting with paper (mark ballot, optical scan, etc...).

16. Kennedy press release

For some insane, bizarro internet-mixup, my e-mail is on some Kennedy mailing list. As I'm always curious to see how the Rethugs are spinning things, I've never bothered to straighten the issue out. Today I received an e-mail where they claim the Star Tribune is trying to select our next representative with a misleading poll. Wow! How sleezy. Why am I not surprised?
