Oil spill shuts down Savannah River
SAVANNAH, Ga. - An oil spill shut down a 12-mile stretch of the Savannah River and part of the Intracoastal Waterway on Monday, with oil visible from near the city of Savannah to the beaches of Tybee Island.

Petty Officer 1st Class Donnie Brzuska, a Coast Guard spokesman, said the source of the spill had not been determined. It was estimated at about 8,000 gallons.

Coast Guard crews were using large booms to try to corral and trap the oil, first reported at 6:40 a.m. Brzuska said it was too early to tell when they could reopen the river, used by ships to access the Port of Savannah. The river runs along the Georgia-South Carolina border.

"We want to ensure we properly clean up the oil ... and before we do that, there are a multitude of things we have to do," Brzuska said. "We've got a significant amount of oil coverage."

I was keeping my Morgan 35 Sailboat in a marina on the Savannah till a few months ago, right in the spill area. Glad i moved it down here to Palm Beach! Oil is next to impossible to really get off of older fiberglass...

3. Georgia could use a few billion.
Find the oil company and sue the Hell out of them.

Bush has seen to it that they can afford it.

4. Now where would 8000 gallons of oil come from, I wonder....
actually it won't take long for the CG to figure out from where it came.

And it won't be pretty on 'em, either, as they would say in Savannah...
