5. House Rejects Gay Marriage Ban Amendment
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:26 PM by cal04
(snip)
The 236-187 vote for the proposal to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman was 47 short of the two-thirds majority needed to advance a constitutional amendment. It followed six weeks after the Senate also decisively defeated the amendment, a top priority of social conservatives.

But supporters said the vote will make a difference when people got to the polls in November.

(snip)
Opponents dismissed the proposal as both discriminatory and legislatively irrelevant because of the Senate vote. The measure is "all for the purpose of pandering to a narrow political base." said Rep. Tammy Baldwin, an openly gay Democrat from Wisconsin. "This hateful and unnecessary amendment is unworthy of our great Constitution."

(snip)
``Today is a shameless attempt to divert and distract,'' Ohio Democrat Dennis Kucinich said.

6. Don't the fundies get tired of being manipulated?
They haven't gotten much, if anything, from GOP control of Congress and the executive branch, despite all the promises.

I mean, at what point are they going to say, "oh, gay marriage again. You know, we don't like gays anymore than you do, but do you guys ever really DO anything for us except talk?"

8. They all seem to be really slow to catch on and react. I'm shocked at
how long it's taken some of them to realize Bush isn't everything he said he was. He was going to return integrity to The White House, remember? Then he lies to go to war, outs a CIA agent, promotes rampant cronyism, has secret meetings, etc.

There is no integrity in The White House, and some of them are just now beginning to question some of the things that have happened. And these same people are walking around on their own recognizance, without supervision! They're allowed to drive vehicles, operate machinery, and raise children.

There ought to be a law against that. Anyone that stupid is surely a menace to society.

7. This is all a scheme to rile all the right wingers up.
They are surely dead set on legalizing discrimination in this country. As long as it doesn't have any effect on them, of course.

Surely they will all go to hell for violating The Ten Commandments. Do unto others and all that stuff. I'm sure this is not how they would want to be treated.

NAZIS.

19. Indeed it is a scam to do just that. We need to remind them that THEY
are in charge and the loons who want to keep gays from being represented in congress need to look to Republicans as to why "gay marriage" wasn't banned.

It's definitely election "bigot bait." Let's hope it backfires.

12. AP writeup: Gay marriage ban fails in House
WASHINGTON - A proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage was defeated Tuesday in the House of Representatives. The vote was 236 yeas, 187 nays, 1 present and 9 not voting - failing to get the two-thirds majority, or 290, yea votes, needed to approve a resolution to amend the Constitution.

Prior to the vote, supporters of the measure were resigned to another losing effort, but were determined to use the loss to highlight the issue in this fall's elections.

"This vote will serve as an opportunity for each and every member of this body to go on record in support or in opposition to protecting the traditional definition of marriage," said Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., at the opening of the debate on the proposal to define marriage as a union of a man and a woman.

Opponents disparaged the measure as both meaningless - the Senate last month decisively rejected the amendment - and mean-spirited.

I know Collin Peterson (MN) and Stephanie Herseth (SD) sure would. Peterson's district is most of west central and northwest Minnesota which can be pretty red in places and South Dakota you can fill in the blanks yourselves with the recent news out of there.
