McKinney, Johnson appear headed for runoff (Georgia)
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 10:13 PM by onehandle
As election results poured in, U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney and Democratic challenger Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. appeared headed for a runoff in the 4th District race.

With 59 percent of the vote counted, McKinney had 47 percent of the vote to Johnson’s 45 percent.

Many statewide races were as close as expected shortly after polling places in Georgia closed and election results began rolling in Tuesday night.

Some polling places in the metro area opened late and stayed past the normal 7 p.m. closing time.

4. latest AP story:
ERRIN HAINES
Associated Press

ATLANTA - Democratic firebrand Rep. Cynthia McKinney was in high spirits Tuesday night, dancing and playing a tambourine as election results showed her with a tight lead over a former DeKalb County Commissioner with roots in the heart of her core constitency.

With 80 percent of the precincts reporting, McKinney was leading with 47 percent of the vote to lawyer Hank Johnson's 45 percent. One of the candidates will need to get more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff on Aug. 8.

8. GA RW talk radio hosts were calling the election for Hank w/ 1% reporting.

What asshats they are. :grr: (Especially the carpetbagging idiot on 750 am WSB tonight...)

Primary runoffs have historically dismal turnouts. The primary had only about 23% turnout. Rep. McKinney will need to rally her supporters to turn out and defeat her Republican backed opponent.

14. Many DeKalb Co. Republicans spoke about a plan to vote in the Dem. primary
just like when they crossed over and voted for Denise Majette in the previous race against Rep. McKinney. They were sucessful in that attempt. McKinney won her seat back when Majette ran (and lost to Chambliss) a race for a senate seat.

16. Cross-over voting happens often, on both sides.
If Republican voted for Harris Miller in the Virginia primary, would that make Harris Miller the "Republican-backed nominee"?

20. problem with your theory
In 2002, McKinney got over 48,000 votes in the primary (out of over 95,000 cast). This time she got fewer than 30,000 votes (out of 62000 cast). Sounds like (a) a lot of Democrats didn't show up or (b) a lot of Demorats decided to ask for a repub ballot so they could vote for Reed's opponent. I doubt that the latter happened that much, but the fact is that there is likely to have been as much, or more, switching by Democrats in yesterday's primary, as by repubs.

27. You are correct: Saxby. Sorry for the error. Those two blend together.
Isakson doesn't even get press in GA ,much less nationally, so I forget about him. When have we heard from him lately? The last time I checked, he didn't even have a website.

12. There is no evidence of that.
There was no concerted effort to oust McKinney that I know of.

She's gotten a Lot of bad press here and the local paper endorsed Johnson.

I've seen tons of Hank Johnson signs and almost no McKinney signs.

13. What leads you to beleive that he will be a "tool for the rethugs"
The same accusations were made against Denise Majette in 2002, yet she went on to have a solid liberal voting record in the House.

29. At best, he'll be bland and silent, thus irrelevant.
An African American politician who isn't progressive and outspoken is usually meaningless and useless.

any more than Majette was. It's that Cynthia really gets their goat, and they want her out of there really badly. Now we'll see to just what lengths they're willing to go to do it.

edit: Plus, they get to do it with (I'm told) only the Sec. of State race on the repuke ballot, so all those mischief-making repukes get to cross right on over...

18. Time To Donate to McKinney
Last year On September 24 there was a massive anti-war rally in Washington D.C. I was there. My estimate was about 300,000. Other estimates ranged from 150,000 to 500,000. One of the reasons for the incredible turnout was the reawakening of the anti-war movement by Cindy Sheehan and the Iraq Veterans Against the War and other groups at Camp Casey in Crawford Texas. (Did I tell you how hot it was at Camp Casey? It was HOT!).

One member of Congress spoke at the September 24 rally. One. One. It was Cynthia McKinney. To me this is simple. She supported the anti-war movement, now it's time to return the favor. On my way to her web site to donate $100.00. Wish it could be more.

21. No it's not. A Democrat will win our seat no matter what.
Spend your cash on candidates that need support.

McKinney did the right thing at the right time, but now is the time to capture Congress and Impeach Bush.

Trust me. Whoever ends up with this seat will vote to impeach Bush.

30. Why do you want the DLC to steal this seat?
There was never any reason to deny McKinney renomination, and nothing that Fox News will celebrate can ever be a good thing for Democrats to support.
