Fire engulfs tanker in Port of Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. A tanker ship is engulfed in flames at the Port of Providence, Rhode Island.

The blaze is sending large plumes of smoke and fireballs into the air. The head of the Providence firefighter's union tells W-P-R-I television that every firefighter in town is on the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate lightning struck the ship. The ship is close to large storage tanks onshore.

Saw a banner on MSNBC, but this is the only link that I could find.

1. They were actually offloading gasoline at the time of the strike
according to my local news. Part of the dock was on fire and the concern was that it would reach the storage tanks. They were able to power it out further away from the dock so it continues to burn further out in the harbor.

Just a preview of what could happen once they put those LNG tanks in Fall River, Mass.

Thank goodness no one seems to be hurt so far.

2.  Fire Engulfs Dock In Port Of Providence
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 12:55 AM by Rainscents
PROVIDENCE (RI) -- Fire engulfed a dock area at the Port of Providence on Tuesday night when lightning struck as a tanker was unloading gasoline, sending large plumes of smoke and fireballs into the air.

Providence Mayor David Cicilline told NBC 10 News that it was unclear whether the lightning struck the ship or the dock, but officials said the 600-foot tanker was able to safely pull away from the dock under its own power.

The fire began at about 10:30 p.m. as severe thunderstorms were moving through the Providence area.

3. If the tanker got away safely...
that means it's the storage tanks exploding.

Well. That sucks.

5. Eh, just another disaster in Bush World....it's like the shitty Nixon era
War, pestilence, fetid canals and groundwater, toxic waste, rusty cars, and tragedy after tragedy after tragedy.

A grey, frightening life, full of despair, fear, uncertainty and inflation.

A bitter malaise across the land....

and it was pinned on him.

10. Yeah, the Nixon era SUCKED. Inflation was horrible. The government
was crumbling. The President was insane. The air was dank and rank.

Feels a lot like nowadays.

We survived because of Jimmy Carter. He was the real deal when it came to bringing "honor and dignity" back to the White House. He set the bar higher. And then, despite the Reagan-Bush years, we did have Tip O'Neill.

And then we had Clinton.

Now, we're back on the dark side of the moon.
