A Wallace Loses Alabama Race (AP/NYT)
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 01:24 AM by Up2Late
(This looks like an editing mistake by the NY Times, this should have it's own page, but this appeared at the bottom of the Ralph Reed Loses story.)

A Wallace Loses Alabama Race

MONTGOMERY, Ala., July 18 (AP) — George C. Wallace Jr., the son of the former governor of Alabama, lost a Republican primary runoff for lieutenant governor on Tuesday.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting statewide, the unofficial count showed Mr. Wallace with 45 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Luther Strange, had 55 percent.

Mr. Strange advances to the general election Nov. 7 against the Democratic nominee, James Folsom Jr., a former governor trying to restart his political career.

(I'll post another link when I find it)

Here the full AP story link, lots of extra stuff the Times cut out, still looking for a separate story from Reed: <http://staging.hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/G/GEORGIA_PRIMARY?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT>

1. In my opinion, this is bad news
George Wallace Jr. isn't his father. And besides, George Wallace Sr. repented for his evil ways in his later years. And I think he meant it too.

Junior is something of a populist.

Luther's ads went as far as to claim that Wallace was somehow aligned with Michael Dukakis and Hillary Clinton. Of course that's hogwash, and says more about Luther Strange than it does about Wallace.

Luther Strange has been a Washington lobbyist for big business, including the infamous HealthSouth. He also did campaign work for the nefarious and stupid Jeff Sessions.

I actually voted in the Republican runoff today, so that I could vote against Luther Strange.

4. Strange, Luther
IIRC, Luther Strange spent many years as a staff lobbyist for the Birmingham-based Southern Company (Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Florida Power, and Mississippi Power), before his HealthSouth days. My ultra-R/W sister has known him for years and worked on his campaign for Eltee-Gov.

2. oh yeah
In November, I'm voting for another famous name in Alabama politics -- Jim Folsom Jr.

He's a former governor, and he was a damn good one. He was responsible for bringing the automobile manufacturing industry to the state, and that produced a lot of well-paying jobs. Of course, then he was defeated by the clown Fob James, probably the worst governor the state has had since the Jim Crow era. :eyes:

5. I lived in Alabama during Fob James' reign of terror......
but not Guy Hunt's. How could anything have been worse than that narrow-minded fundie asshole Fob James? I remember when he did "the monkey dance" to protest the teaching of evolution..
