AP: U.S. Citizens accused of plotting "violent Jihad"
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060720/NEWS/607200335/1092/NEWS01

ATLANTA - Two men were indicted Wednesday on charges of undergoing paramilitary training in northwest Georgia and plotting a "violent jihad" against civilian and government targets, including an air base in suburban Atlanta.

The new indictment accuses Syed Ahmed, 21, a Georgia Tech student who was arrested in March, and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, 19, of traveling to Washington to film possible targets, including the U.S. Capitol and World Bank headquarters, and sharing the recordings with another alleged terrorist in Great Britain

<snip>

The indictment alleges that the two men received paramilitary training at an undisclosed location in northwest Georgia in late 2004 and early 2005, and discussed various attacks, including one at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta.

Ahmed also is accused of traveling to Pakistan in an unsuccessful attempt to train with Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, or Army of the Righteous, an Islamic extremist group that has been active in India for several years.

<snip>

*Additional info: The article notes that one suspect was arrested in Bangladesh and extradited to the United States. Is that important? I have no idea.*

1. If these guys are really terrorists, I'm glad they are behind bars.
Mainly because I work directly across the street from Dobbins Air Reserve Base.

4. The word "jihad" has been hijacked
It means "struggle" and even the Beloved Prophet (pbuh) stated that the greater struggle is within yourself, to get rid of ego. Far better that these men, like many American Muslims, work on the greater jihad-and these lesser ones:

1. the jihad against poverty
2. the jihad against inequality, especially in voting
3. the jihad against intolerance-which is won by being tolerant yourself.

6. "There's a "paramilitary training" camp"...
That's what I was thinking. If there is such a camp in that area, it's most likely turning out future Tim McVeighs.

13. "Paramilitary training camp"
In these cases, that typically means a quarry in the woods where they did target practice.

There are undoubtedly thousands of these paramilitary training camps across the country!!!!

7. What a coincidence.
All these "terrorists" are being found in the homeland in an election year! And their plans are being thwarted by Homeland Security! Who would have guessed?

12. Is the connection with Bangladesh important?
In this case, hard to say.

Bangladesh is Muslim, and has a minor Islamic insurgency of its own going on. The usual: a small minority of Muslim can mount large protests, apparently entirely composed of chanting non-supporters holding banners and signs supporting those that they disagree with, and yet saying that what they think they should be doing everybody else must be forced to do. Since they don't want to see movies, those who see movies can be bombed and killed. The usual shari'a nonsense that's been the bane of Islamdom for 1200 years, with imams whipping up the crowds in order to promote their favorite vice, making sure everybody's virtuous so they're not tempted. It's all about submission, you know.

The Bangladeshi Islamist movement is still mostly focused on Bangladesh, AFAIK. My hunch is that the guy went to stay with relatives in hopes of getting enmeshed in the local movement, since getting mixed up in the Pakistani jihadi circles through British contacts didn't work out.
