U.S. Says Attacks in Iraq Up 40 Percent

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's top Shiite cleric urged his followers Thursday to refrain from reprisal violence against Sunnis, his strongest call yet for an end to increasing sectarian bloodshed. The statement by Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani came as U.S. military officials reported a 40 percent increase in the daily average of attacks in the Baghdad area.

U.S. spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said there has been an average of 34 attacks a day against U.S. and Iraqi forces in the capital over the past five days. The daily average for the period June 14 until July 13 was 24 a day, he said.

"We have not witnessed the reduction in violence one would have hoped for in a perfect world," U.S. spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said at a news briefing Thursday. "The only way we're going to be successful in Baghdad is to get the weapons off the streets."

Caldwell said militias and death squads have responded to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's call for a crackdown by intensifying attacks to derail Iraq's new unity government.

It's a beautiful world we live in
A sweet romantic place
Beautiful people everywhere
The way they show they care
Makes me want to say
It's a beautiful world
For you

It's a wonderful time to be here
It's nice to be alive
Wonderful people everywhere
The way they comb their hair
Makes me want to say
It's a wonderful place
For you

Hey

Tell me what I say

Boy n girl with the new clothes on
You can shake it to me all night long

Hey hey

It's not for me

2. Thank God we've turned a corner.
With the resistance in it's last throes like this, and Iraqi troops ready to take control of the situation, we can finally start bringing home the troops, and we won't be cutting and running or surrendering to terrorists. I just don't understand why the media isn't reporting all the good news from Iraq.

I also don't understand why we need to get all the weapons off the streets. Everyone knows an armed society is a polite society. </freeper talk>

7. But wait! Didn't we kill the head of the insurgency? Al Zarqawi?
They should have just laid their weapons down and bowed to their new puppet government...
