'Sixth Sense' Star in Hospital After Crash
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. (AP) - Actor Haley Joel Osment was hospitalized early Thursday after he apparently lost control of his car while heading to his Los Angeles area home, authorities said.

Osment, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as a boy who could see dead people in "The Sixth Sense," was driving a 1995 Saturn about 1 a.m. when the car collided with a brick pillar and flipped, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Greg Sisneros.

The 18-year-old actor was awake and talking following the crash, Sisneros said. He had been alone in the car and was taken to Huntington Hospital in nearby Pasadena.

In case you haven't seen him in a while, here is what he looks like at age 18:

I hope he's OK.

One tells me he pulls over just about anyone he sees after 2:00 or 3:00 am, because he doesn't think anyone out that late can possibly be up to anything good. A form of profiling, to be sure. But to a certain degree, he has a point.

26. We had to do that with our firstborn
The car put him to sleep in two minutes. We lived near I-91 in CT, and would get on the hiway, drive one exit up the road and by the time we pointed the car back home, he was out. Worked every time.

We also used a hand-held vacuum near his crib at times. The car was a sure-thing though. Now he's the one who's an angel at bedtime and his little sister, who never had a problem with sleep when she was a baby, is the monster. She's way too old for the car or the vacuum.

59. And I thought I was the only one who drove
around in the wee hours trying to get a baby to sleep. I would have to strap her in to her carseat and just drive around the neighborhood at 2AM. Sometimes it took up to a half hour before she'd nod off. I was always afraid I'd be pulled over and have to explain myself.

By the way, the first time she actually slept through the night, she was four years old.

13. He's a rather humble fellow.
His parents brought him up in about as un-Hollywood a manner as possible, even to the extent that he was assigned regular household chores. He also went to public school when he wasn't making movies. Driving an ordinary "teenager car" fits his personality.

As for the dearth of movies coming from him in recent years, it's quite easy for a famous child actor to find work up until the age of 14 or so. Then it gets really, really hard to find the kind of role suitable for an actor of Osment's caliber. Amanda Bynes or Frankie Muniz had an easier time of it because the expectations were much, much lower, and the films almost lighter than air. In Osment's case, you had Secondhand Lions (with the guy who stole his Oscar - Michael Caine) when he was going on 15, and then nothing until this fall.

21. Nothing at all!
I didn't say there is ANYTHING wrong with driving a 1995 Saturn. Let's keep it in context, please. The guy is supposedly a Hollywood movie star, and well recognized in a couple of very well-known movies. All I'm saying is that a 1995 Saturn is not the first car you'd think a Hollywood star would be driving. Do you disagree with that, or are we going to try and make something out of nothing? It had nothing to do with 1995 Saturns. In that regard, you're way off base. I was speaking of the cars Hollywood stars drive, not 1995 Saturns.

just because he's "well off" doesn't mean he has to drive a Lambourgini. Or does it?

What I'm saying is, I don't find it surprising at all that he drives a 1995 Saturn.

some people are just not into "show". and *gasp* - hold on now - some people like that are actually actors. and actresses. and doctors. and lawyers. and indian chiefs.

37. Not 11 years old
I would think that he might want to drive a smallish agile car with decent gas mileage. I understand that, but I would think that he would have traded it in for something newer. At 11 years old the car starts wearing out. You start needing to worry more about maintenence and such. Head gaskets and timing belts and transmissions and such. Suspension begins getting soft and bouncy. Maybe the tranny's starting to wear out. Creaks and rattles on the rise. Maybe wiring problems. And the emissions may start going south as well. Not an issue here in the Northland (Emissions inspections? Emissions inspections? We don't need so stinkin' emissions inspections!) but I understand that California is just a hair stricter.

I just figured he might be tooling around in like a 2002 or 2003 model of car.

49. Saturns last forever
11 yr old car, maybe, but they can last a long time. Mine had 160,000 miles on it and I had it for 10 years (home care job that I had put miles and wear/tear on it). I could see where a Saturn NOT driven around as much as mine could still be a good, reliable vehicle, even after 10 years. Maybe he is trying to make his money last longer than some of the older child stars we see in the news who are penniless train wrecks?

Hub(Robert Duvall) "Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in."

Saying he''s drunk, on drugs, trying to kill himself, is stupid or whatever for driving a car APPROPRIATE to his age and experience... the kid has good parents and has always seemed grounded. It was an inexperienced driver, driving too late and possibly too fast, and banged into a medium-type thing.

58. A suicide attempt is a reasonable possibility.
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 08:54 PM by femmedem
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college age youths. Four times as many males as females commit suicide. Unfortunately, suicide is more common than most people realize. If we understood this, we would perhaps be better prepared to prevent suicide among friends and loved ones.

http://www.nmha.org/infoctr/factsheets/82.cfm

Edit to include: I'm just saying this to increase awareness of the real risk of suicide, not because I have any knowledge about this young actor. (I don't.)

51. Hard Timez

Ok, say what you will, call me materialistic or whatever but if I was a movie star no fucking way i'm driving around in a '95 Saturn. Screw trying to make a point or 'being a normal kid' or whatever. I could be a 'normal kid' driving a four door Maserati.

52. I test drove this model
From the 1995.01 issue of Consumer Reports, page 58:

Recalls
...
'95 Saturn SL
Driver could completely lose steering control.
Models: 931 cars, with nonpower steering, made 8/94.
What to do: Have dealer replace steering assembly.

I don't know if this is his car.

I hope he's O.K. He's a wonderful actor.

57. My god I hope
he isn't involved in drugs and alcohol. I think he's a fantastic actor and I'd hate to see him go the way of other child actors...............

62. About Haley.......
Just by coincidence......I was just reading some comments about HJO, by the actor Jim Beaver, who plays "Ellsworth" on the HBO series Deadwood. Sounds like he thinks pretty highly of the kid. Said the he, JB, is currently writing a western screenplay that he and Haley hope to co-produce. (Maybe Osment is more interested in being behind the camera that in front of it.)

Jim Beaver:
"Haley and I have been friends since he was 5. (He's 18 now.) We were on a sitcom together, and our families grew really close, and still are. In fact, his parents are my child's guardians, if something happens to me."

"I talked to his dad a little while ago and I'm getting ready to go see him at the hospital. He's banged up with breaks, bruises, and lacerations but will recover fully.

I hope you don't think Haley should give in to the cliché and get a Porsche or Beemer just because he's a "movie star." He's one of the most down-to-earth people I've ever met. I think he drives what he drives because it's a good car and it works well and why buy another when you've got a good one already. (It was originally his dad's car.)

I gotta tell you, this scared me terribly, at least until I talked to his dad. I love that boy like my own child."
