Democrats Have Eyes Fixed on Colorado
Democrats Have Eyes Fixed on Colorado
Thursday July 20, 2006 7:16 PM
By JON SARCHE
Associated Press Writer

DENVER (AP) - Colorado glistened like a small gem among coals for Democrats in 2004, with two congressional wins and majority control of the state legislature for the first time since John F. Kennedy was president.

Democrats are hoping Colorado shines even brighter this November.

Up for grabs is the governorship and two open House seats, with Democrats contending that they have a chance to make deeper inroads in a Western state that has been reliably Republican for years. Colorado backed President Bush in 2000 and 2004 and Bob Dole in 1996.

Washington's political scandals and deficit spending have driven some Colorado voters to the Democrats, while the perception of the Republican Party's increasing alignment with Christian evangelical ideology has turned off moderates, analysts say.

2. About bloody time.
Colorado would have gone Kerry in 2004 if the DNC had believed us when we told them that Colorado was a swing state. Bush won here by narrow margins, and we could have closed those margins with a little more money. We weren't declared "in play" until too late in the game.

I don't like Ritter (the dem gov candidate) but he's better than Beauprez, and Musgrave's seat is very much in play.

5. I used to live in Denver and it just galled me to no end...........
.....that Colorado was republican when it was definitely against their best interest to remain republican. I worked for DeGette's campaign, among others.

6. Strickland would have beaten Allard in 02 but for the voting machines.
So it's not the political mood of the state that's important; it's the voting machines, and I'm afraid they're pretty entrenched in CO at the moment.

7. We didn't have voting machines in Denver in the last election.
But they're moving to them in this upcoming one. Don't know about the rest of the state. . .

8. Colorado is a very extreme state, from what I understand.

Folks who live there are either full-fledged progressives or full-fledged conservatives. There is no inbetween in Colorado.

9. There are many lawsuits in CO
in lots of counties over the voting machines that are now required because of the "Help America Vote Act". I live in CO and i wish we weren't red but a lot of people who voted for bush in 2004 are voting democrat this time around (my mother included), so hopefully we'll be blue
