Israel: Lebanese in south should flee now

Invasion Looming.

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli troops met fierce resistance from Hezbollah guerrillas Thursday as they crossed into Lebanon to seek tunnels and weapons for a second straight day, and Israel hinted at a full-scale invasion.

Israel warned residents to “immediately” flee a nearly 20-mile swath of south Lebanon along the border. Its warplanes also launched new airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, shortly after daybreak, followed by strikes in the guerrillas’ heartland in the south and eastern Bekaa Valley.

The planes also bombed large parts of the south, from which Hezbollah guerrillas fired more rockets into Israel. On Wednesday, Israeli bombings killed as many as 70 people, according to Lebanese television, making it the deadliest day since the fighting began July 12.

A large fight between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas broke out Thursday evening on the Lebanese side of the border, the Israeli army said, adding that its troops suffered casualties but did not elaborate. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television said three Israeli soldiers were killed and 10 wounded in fighting.

2. oh groan...
do they have to try to leave while the bombing is still going on, or are they going to take a break so the citizens have a chance to flee in relative safety?

5. I don't think this applies to S. Lebanon but
"Olmert allows Humanitarian corridor in Lebanon

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, along with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Amir Peretz decided Thursday to allow for the creation of a humanitarian corridor between Lebanese citizens, wishing to flee Lebanon, and Cyprus."

3. And probably the INNOCENT residents will be least ABLE TO FLEE,
while the supposed targets (Hezbollah) will be miles away come morning.

But that's the innocent people's problem, right?

10. The Rapture Ready Bushbots
are certainly praying for such an outcome. They can't wait for an excuse to start a nuclear war in the ME, so that the Temple Mount can be destroyed in order for their Jesus to return. Of course, that means destroying all the Israelis too, but that part's a secret.

9. Better not go all at the same time, and don't use any trucks
Going all at the same time will make it look like a convoy, and convoys are suspect. Especially when trucks are involved.

Death Toll in Lebanon Reaches 330; 500,000 Displaced
The death toll in Lebanon now stands at around 330. The Israeli bombardment has displaced over 500,000 people. One in every eight Lebanese residents has been forced to flee their homes – and the refugee situation is expected to worsen. The Israeli military is broadcasting radio messages in South Lebanon ordering all civilians to leave the region. The Israeli military has also warned it will bomb any truck driven in the area.

Israel calls up reservists for push into Lebanon
By Times Online and Nicholas Blanford in Tyre, Lebanon

Israel called up five battalions of army reservists today and dropped leaflets across
southern Lebanon warning civilians to leave towns and villages and head north towards
Beirut as it prepared for a major ground offensive against Hezbollah positions.

Israeli troops have been making "pinpoint" incursions over the border and four soldiers
were killed yesterday in a firefight with Hezbollah guerrillas in the border zone near
Avivim, but Israeli commanders have been wary of committing forces to a full-scale ground
offensive, preferring instead to concentrate on air strikes and artillery bombardment.

A senior Israeli Defence Force commander, Brigadier-General Alon Friedman, gave the broadest
hint yet that an offensive was on the cards.

He told the Maariv newspaper: "It’s possible that in the coming days our ground operations
will increase. We have many forces, we will carry out a massive recruitment of reserves and
it’s possible that many more forces ... will reach the border in the next few days."
