Schwarzenegger gives $150M stem cell loan (AP)

SACRAMENTO -- A day after President Bush vetoed expanded federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday authorized a $150 million loan to fund California's stem cell institute, which has been stalled by lawsuits.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican who has been trying to put distance between himself and the unpopular president as he seeks re-election this year, said the state cannot afford to wait to fund the critical science associated with stem cells.

"I remain committed to advancing stem cell research in California, in the promise it holds for millions of our citizens who suffer from chronic diseases and injuries that could be helped as a result of stem cell research," Schwarzenegger said in a letter to his finance director.

The state's voters created the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine in 2004 when they passed a ballot measure that authorized $3 billion over 10 years for stem cell research.

SNIP

Thank You, Arnold.

9. Donation? NOT!
LOAN-YES!
One is very different than the other. Bill Gates makes million$ and billion$ donations, that are not loans and will never be repaid, and he only needs a couple not to pay income taxes.
The CA governor is still responsible to pay income taxes if he doesn't have enough deductions, and a loan is not a deduction! If it is repaid with interest, the interest is taxable.

12. This isn't his money he's releasing...
The monies stem (pun intended) from State propositin 71 that passed in 2004. He's simply releasing it now. Politics, don't you know?!

10. YUP
It is another step away from bush and telling him to go to hell! Makes him look a bit better as a repub but stepping completely away to his wife's party could help him a lot more politically!

11. Oh, I thought it was HIS money. Good enough, but then, he wouldn't miss it
either. Fuck him, this was a nice effort but he still has a lot to answer for that this won't cover.

13. Come on...
Long before Arnold turned to the darkside, he was a pot smoking, freak from Venice, known to everyone as the "Austrian Oak".

His life was a big science experiment...seeing how far the human body could go. And at the time...his went the furthest!

He's probably thinking stem-cell research can help fix what he did to his nads shooting up dbol! ;)

Schwarzenegger provides $240m stem-cell centre loan

1.00pm Friday July 21, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has moved to provide his state's voter approved stem-cell research institute with a loan of up to US$150 million (NZ$240m).

The governor's decision came after President George W. Bush vetoed a bill to expand federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research.

The loan will come from California's general fund and will support grants for medical research involving stem cells, which many researchers believe can be used to develop treatments and cures for various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.
(snip)

The money will help the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine fund initial research grants.

16. damn it, we voted for that bill
tell the whackos that they lost, and get to researching. I am so tired of the BushCo war on science I wanna:puke: .

Hubby has diabetes and must use insulin. For every person who suffers from this devistating disease, I hope that something comes of this research. It is depressing to watch the slow degeneration of folks with diabetes, even with the best of control.

17. Rove told him to do this.
The Gropenfurher does nothing without Rove's input.

And the slack-jawed sheep of California will "re"-elect him.
