Protest planned as Jeb Bush addresses business lunch

21/07/2006

Anti-war campaigners are planning to mount a protest in Dublin today as the brother of US President George W Bush gives a speech to American businesspeople in Ireland.

Florida Governor Jeb Bush has been invited to address a private lunch at the Conrad Hotel arranged by the American Chamber of Commerce.

Several anti-war groups are planning to mount a picket outside the Conrad Hotel when Mr Bush arrives.

They say he is not just the governor of Florida, but also a leading "neo-conservative" who was an architect of the policy that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

A small group of anti-war protestors, including Deputy Lord Mayor Aodhaon O'Riordan, has gathered to mount a picket outside the hotel.

More than 60 gardaí have also been taking up positions in the area, out-numbering the demonstrators by two to one.

Mr O'Riordan says he is taking part because he firmly believes that Dubliners do not want Mr Bush visiting their city.

1. I see he's addressing American businessmen at a private lunch.

I'm sure the audience is 100% GOP and that Jeb is too much of a coward to actually meet or speak with the Irish people. President Clinton is widely admired in Irelnad. I hope the protestors are allowed to protest freely unlike here in BushCo America.

2. Why is my governor in another country?
Is there some state business or maybe even some trading discussed. Why is the governor of FLORIDA in IRELAND in a business meeting?

Could it be that his interests don't lie with the people of his state?

3. We apologized
to every Irish person we met on our last trip for * and his minions. The most common response was..."we know you didn't elect him so..." They knew more about the details of the "election" and cared more than most americans I talk to. They knew about Kathrine Harris and Blackwell etc
Give em hell protesters!

Protester tells US president's brother where to go

21/07/2006 - 18:07:27

A lone protester today told Governor of Florida Jeb Bush to go home after breaching a security cordon around the US president’s brother.

Mr Bush held talks with the Taoiseach at Government Buildings before speaking at a private American Chamber of Commerce lunch in the nearby Conrad Hotel.
However, a member of Labour Youth sneaked past gardaí and hotel security and gained access to the conference room where Mr Bush was speaking.
Jane Horgan Jones from Stillorgan, Dublin said: “I got into the back of the hall and had just managed to shout ’Jeb Bush Go Home’ just as they were introducing him onto the podium.

“But then I was pulled away by the Special Branch.”

Ms Horgan Jones’ friend Orla Treacy from Blackrock, Dublin also gained entry as far as the double-doors of the conference room but was stopped by plainclothes detectives.

Outside the Conrad Hotel, up to 50 anti-war protestors waved peace banners and the Palestinian flag, chanting "One, two, three, four; We don’t want you here no more. Five, six, seven eight; This is not a US state".

Fintan Lane, a spokesperson for Anti-War Ireland, who organised the protest said: “Jeb Bush is a prominent neo-conservative and one of the architects of the aggressive and deeply conservative regime that now runs the United States.
“Bertie Ahern should have met Jeb Bush only if he intended to use the meeting as an opportunity to express Irish revulsion at US military actions in the Middle East,” Mr Lane added.
Mr Bush also held private meetings with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Scottish deputy first minister Nicol Stephen.
