U.S. Democrats call for Bush to send Mideast envoy

WASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Democratic leaders on Friday called on President George W. Bush to send a high-level special envoy to the Middle East to work with allies and negotiate an end to the fighting between Israel and Hizbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Sen. Joseph Biden, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said in a letter to Bush they were "surprised" that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice planned only a brief stop in the region next week.

"The United States needs to step forward and do the hard diplomatic work required to put in place a sustainable settlement and prevent a return to the status quo ante where Hizbollah attacked Israel at will," they wrote.

"Unfortunately, the architecture that you have constructed to deal with the Middle East is not adequate, as it does not allow for the kind of high level and sustained involvement that is required," they added.

1. But Condi's going!
I'm sure she'll do a heckuva job. Maybe she'll have some free time to shop for shoes too.

4. Condi is only going to Israel (?)
She is not up to the job. It would take someone with qualified diplomatic abilities.

3. Spineless posturing weasels.
How about a cease fire? Sanctions with teeth? Some lying bureaucrat shuttling back and forth in 1st class is just a fancy way to stall while the war goes on.

8. I don't see ANY daylight, in substance, between the position the bush
cabal has taken and the position taken in the Dems call. If all they want is someone other than condi to do what condi is going to do, only meet with allies to try and get total support for Israel and do nothing to meet with representatives of Syria, Iran and Lebanon and be an honest broker, it doesn't matter if it is condi or not, result will be the same, imo, no ceasefire, no secession of hostilities.
