Sydney anti-war protest gathers momentum
July 22, 2006 - 7:39AM

A Sydney protest against Israeli attacks on Lebanon is gathering in momentum with between 10,000 and 20,000 people marching through the city.

Demonstrators began gathering at Town Hall in the Sydney CBD about noon (AEST) on Saturday, later making their way down George Street.

Police say more than 10,000 people have turned up while organisers put the number at closer to 20,000.

Protesters carrying coffins and chanting "no war" have marched to Martin Place ...

2. Anti-war protest ends peacefully
A SYDNEY protest against Israeli attacks on Lebanon has wound up after between 10,000 and 20,000 people marched through the city.

Demonstrators began gathering at Town Hall in the Sydney CBD about noon (AEST) today, later making their way down George Street.

Police say more than 10,000 people have turned up while organisers put the number at closer to 20,000.

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib and the spiritual leader of Australia's Muslim community, Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali, were some of the high-profile people who rallied to show their support.
