Democrats Slam Bush's Stem Cell Bill Veto (weekly radio address)
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 11:13 AM by cal04
A Colorado congresswoman said Saturday that President Bush was motivated by "cold, calculated, cynical political gain" when he vetoed a bill that would expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

"The president's veto had nothing to do with morals," Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., said in the Democrats' weekly radio address, but instead "the kind of politics that snuffs out the candle of hope and that condemns the disabled and the sick."

DeGette and Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., co-sponsored the bill, which would allow federal funds to be used in research on embryos derived from fertility treatments that would otherwise be discarded.

(snip)
DeGette called Bush's veto "a sad sidebar in a debate that has been about ethical scientific research and hope."

1. Why not let the research scientists decide?
As far as I can determine, all opposition to stem-cell research has come from fundies, and Repubs who pander to fundies, who claim such research is unnecessary. If that's the case, then why not let scientists involve in this research decide? It seems to me they should be the ones most qualified to make that decision.

2. I hope bush regrets this hateful, obnoxious veto
to his dying day. Maybe he will get something that would have been helped by the stem cell research but it will be to late for him. ALS sounds goo. That is so awful.

4. Nancy Pelosi and Diana stood up as one voice
And put out what they felt. Diana did a lot of hard work on the bill. Anger at fellow Dems is strong with their votes not to override
