400,000 Frozen Embryos (only 128 'snowflakes' have been adopted)
So, maybe we can get the former Texas governor to use the unitary executive bully pulpit to find 400,000 evangelical Xtian couples to adopt a snowflake, don'tcha think?

400,000 Frozen Embryos
...But only 128 'snowflakes' have been adopted. Will the stem-cell veto hurt the GOP?
by Eleanor Clift

...

There are 400,000 embryos languishing in storage tanks at fertility clinics; only a very small number are candidates for adoption. “Even with federal funding available to encourage adoption, the number is 128, which makes it conclusive that these 400,000 embryos will either be used for scientific research or thrown away,” said Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, who supports expanded research. The legislation, which passed by wide margins in the Republican-controlled House and Senate but fell short of a vetoproof two-thirds majority, would only use embryos that would otherwise be discarded, and then only with the written consent of the couple that created them.

29. Here Comes Suzy Snowflake
You can hear an MiDi version of the tune here (click the MiDi link). Rosemary Clooney's cover of this song is one of my favorite old-fashioned holiday pop songs. And people of a certain age who grew up in or near Chicago may well remember a wonderful little stop-motion animated version that WGN would play on Saturday mornings during the holiday season.

these "embryos" are only a few cells, smaller than a pencil point, there is no way they will be used, I knew a couple that went through this. They wanted a baby, not to repopulate the planet. I think that the process had resulted in 10 or 11 of these
embryos with 2 of them viable.

5. Don't you think the donor parents may have a problem with
someone "adopting" their fertilized eggs?

I've been thinking about this since Shrub started publicizing the Snowflakes. Don't you think some people would be concerned about WHO might be adopting "their" potential kids? I think the legal problems could be resolved, but I'm talking about emotional ties. I think at least some people would prefer their leftover embryos to be used for science instead of never knowing if or where their offspring were.

14. Very few
Only 2% of the fertilized embryos have been allowed to be adopted. Parents are very wary of letting their genetic material out.

Most end of being unusable or being destroyed.

Many are given to private research labs doing embryonic stem cell research. Just no federal government funding. (I have MS so I keep track of this!) Many MS patients are already reciving stem cell therapy from UMBILICAL cells or from our own marrow. Very promising.

22. That's what I expected. I only knew one couple who went through
a fert. clinic. It's very expensive, and takes a lot of effort and dedication to accomplishing what you want. I would have been shocked to hear that very many were willing to just give the OK to someone unknown to use their genes.

Good luck to you. I hope they come up with a cure soon.

Even with federal funding available to encourage adoption

Is this true - there is a federal government program to fund the acquisition human beings!! They call it adoption but the embryo's will be sold. Why do we fund this insanity and not fund research?

26. Actually, you might have just nailed this scam, because only about...
...1 of 7 or so, of these frozen, soon to be discarded, leftover Early Blastocyst (NOT Embryos!) even end up working out to make a child.

I bet they do get a tax break for each one the "adopt."

If this wasn't mostly just bogus propaganda, and they applied ALL the laws they keep preaching, all these people would be up on several counts of murder for ALL the Early Blastocyst that die in the process.

Here's a link to the Visible Embryo, an excellent website that shows the stages of development, a stage 3 or 4 Early Blastocyst is what we are talking about here:

20. 28 years and 3,000,000 babies,Talk back in 1978:Test Tube master race?
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 12:48 PM by DianaForRussFeingold
"On July 25th, 1978, Drs. Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe deliver the world’s first test tube baby. Louise Brown is the daughter of Lesley and John, a couple from Bristol, England, who have been trying to conceive for nine years. Their miraculous success gives hope to millions of infertile couples but arouses deep concern in others. Should man play God? Will scientists soon be able to manufacture a master race? On CBC’s Radio Noon phone-in program, callers give their opinions.http://archives.cbc.ca/IDC-1-75-610-3415/science_technology/infertility/clip2 Rabbi Gunther Plaut, the in-studio guest, is skeptical about this scientific advancement. Having escaped Hitler’s Germany, he’s all too aware of the possibility of genetic engineering. Some of the show’s callers are more optimistic, seeing the possibility of offering motherhood to all. Fifteen per cent of couples suffer infertility. In Lesley Brown’s case, blocked fallopian tubes are the problem; her eggs cannot travel from her ovaries to her uterus. Her only hope was an unproven procedure - in vitro fertilization." Some people thought that in-vitro fertilization was the heralding of a Brave New World, and that it would replace natural procreation?
Well, it turns out that argument was total bulls**t...it brought hope to millions of infertile couples.

25. "Human life...should never be...put up for sale..." GWB SOTU 2006
Remember when "the Decider" said this!!!

"...A hopeful society has institutions of science and medicine that do not cut ethical corners, and that recognize the matchless value of every life. Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research: human cloning in all its forms, creating or implanting embryos for experiments, creating human-animal hybrids, and buying, selling, or patenting human embryos. Human life is a gift from our Creator -- and that gift should never be discarded, devalued

or put up for sale....":hi:

--- George W. Bush, January 31, 2006 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS United States Capitol
Washington, D.C. 9:12 P.M. EST <http://www.whitehouse.gov/stateoftheunion/2006/index.html>

The selective morality of the GOP is just STUNNING on this one! Because unless they are giving these "snowflake embrios" away FOR FREE, which they are NOT, they are "...creating or implanting embryos for experiments...and buying, selling...human embryos." "...Human life...should never be...put up for sale...." :banghead:
 :nuke:

Anyone have one of the Snowflake Baby press conferences on tape or your DVR? This would be an easy attack ad to edit!

should be forced to "adopt" these embryos and carry them to term, one at a time, until there are no more left.

Maybe 80,000 couples, with 5 forced pregnancies each. Works for me.

make this a topic for their sermons?

They like to mix religion, and politics and put their own spin on it so why don't they push snowflake adoptions every Sunday? Think of the possibilities for bake sales and craft fairs and the creative Snowflake cookies and cupcakes and baby clothes these folks could make to help their members who want to adopt a snowflake.

Why this could become a new Project for Pickles!

36. Even IF 400,000 embryos
were implanted in other women, they will NOT result in 400,000 babies. Simple biology. Every fertilized egg does not result in a full term baby, even with natural intercourse. Duh? That is the REASON they create multiple embryos in the first place.

But then, this administration wants to rewrite science back to the stone age to fit their Fundie agenda.
