22 July 2006

KUWAIT - Kuwait’s highest court on Saturday upheld the acquittal of five Kuwaiti former Guantanamo detainees on charges of belonging to al Qaeda, state news agency KUNA reported.

The five, who returned to the Gulf Arab state in November, were also cleared of charges of “fighting a friendly state”, a reference to the United States.

They had been freed after their acquittal by a lower court in May on charges that had been laid after their return home.

“The Court of Cassation ruled they were innocent due to a lack of evidence to support the charges against them,” said KUNA.

Lawyers slam Guantanamo seizures
From: Agence France-Presse From correspondents in Washington
July 22, 2006

LAWYERS for Guantanamo Bay detainees claim US authorities seized huge stocks of documents protected by laws on client-lawyer confidentiality while probing three suicides at the detention centre.

In more than 100 petitions filed with courts in Washington, they said US authorities launched an illegal investigation into the June 10 suicides to see how they had been prepared and whether new ones were being planned.
In all, 500 kilograms of documents have been seized from lawyers and "war on terror" detainees during the investigation, the petitions said.

The Yemeni lawyers of five Guantanamo prisoners presented one document in which investigators argued before the Justice Department that "the attorney-client (relationship), while venerable, is not without limits."

2. Our poor nation has been commandered by a bunch of thugs who have
no respect for any laws, no respect for any human rights, and no respect for life (other than a bizarre showing for the concern of embryos).
