Indonesian Quake Triggers Tsunami Warning
07.23.2006, 06:00 AM

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Sunday,
the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Indonesian officials recorded the quake at a magnitude of 6.6 and said it had
the potential to cause a tsunami. One governor on the island ordered a coastal
evacuation, but it was unclear whether the message got through to residents.

The quake struck 67 miles south of Gorontalo in northern Sulawesi, according
to the survey. It was felt across parts of Sulawesi, but there were no reports
of damage or injuries.

4. The data comes from the US Geological Survey.
Assuming they're not doing anything weird with the raw data, it's about as reliable as this kind of thing gets.

5. I would say it's pretty accurate...
They use data from numerous Global Seismic Network stations to determine epicenter and magnitude. Each station is highly sensitive and well calibrated. I was just on Sulawesi a couple of months ago to repair the KAPI station there. The Seismic Monitor shows events for the past 24 hours, and it has been very active in that area lately. I will be going to Fiji and Kwajelin atoll soon for station repairs and upgrades that will improve our monitoring capability in that area of the Pacific. I am hoping that our efforts will improve our Tsunami warning abilities in that area.

Peace - :)
