Senator Dodd Promises "Bruising" Fight Over UN Ambassador Bolton
NYT/Reuters: Dodd Promises "Bruising" Fight Over Bolton
By REUTERS
Published: July 23, 2006

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut on Sunday promised a bruising fight in the U.S. Senate against confirming John Bolton to be the country's ambassador to the United Nations.

President George W. Bush bypassed the Senate and installed Bolton into the position last year when lawmakers were on recess.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee scheduled a confirmation hearing on Bolton for Thursday after Ohio Republican Sen. George Voinovich, who previously opposed the nomination, expressed support for Bolton.

"This is going to be a bruising fight,'' Dodd said on CNN's ''Late Edition'' program....He argued that problems Democrats had raised last year were not resolved. They blocked the nomination amid accusations Bolton in his previous job as the top U.S. diplomat for arms control had bullied intelligence analysts.

"The problems still persist. Many ambassadors at the U.N. feel he hasn't done a good job there,'' said Dodd, who serves on the Foreign Relations Committee. "It's polarized the situation.''...

the concerns the dems had before bush's appointment have only been magnified by the incompetence he has shown while there.

15. i can read the opening news stories now...
"Washington-area hospital ER's were crowded today, treating liberal Democratic senators who were bloodied and bruised by DLC/Scaredy-crat senators stampeding to the GOP side of the aisle to second John "Bonkers" Bolton's renomination..." One more reason to get rid of Holy Joe-nertia Leiberman.

22. It WOULD Be Too Much To Expect That Bolton and the GOP
were the ones coming out of this bruised and bloodied.

If the Democrats in the Legislature were united to impeach, it would happen. As long as there are DINOS fouling up the party, there will be stalemate.

17. The RSCC is not sure at all they will hold onto the Senate
otherwise, they'd wait till next year. They must think they have a very real chance at losing the Senate. There's no other reason to be doing this. Bolten won't be an election year issue, and the GOP has everything to lose in airing Bolten's dirty laundry again. So they are just going to go for it.

24. Yep....ram it through while Israel/Lebanon is in Crisis and whispers of
ME War rage everywhere. The Repugs will say: "Don't switch boats in mid-stream..give Bolton a chance to finish his business," and the Dems after a bruising debate will vote for "status quo" not wanting to not give the P-Resident his personal choice with Bolton or to "switch boats in mid-stream" with a "war going on."

They can't ditch Bolton, for practical, strategic and political reasons with what's going on in Lebanon.

I can't get my hopes up that either Repugs or Dems will sink Bolton. Agree it's RAM HIM THROUGH... I don't want another disappointment to dwell on.

29. Democrats will cave in because the Israel Lobby will support Bolton
and I expect Lieberman to lead the charge in favor of Bolton's nomination. This war will have a spill-over effect on the 2006 elections, and perhaps even in 2008.

The battle lines are being drawn!

Bolton defends Israel's actions in Lebanon

Sunday, July 23, 2006; Posted: 5:19 p.m. EDT (21:19 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Against growing international criticism that Israel's response to Hezbollah's July 12 attack has been disproportionate, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations on Sunday defended Israel's use of force.

"I think it's important that we not fall into the trap of moral equivalency here," Ambassador John Bolton told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer."

Will Israel Rescue Joe Lieberman?

With Israel under fire, Lieberman's presence might be seen as critical to the pro-Israeli voting bloc. That may re-energize Lieberman's campaign, which has operating on the defensive ever since Lieberman announced that he would run as an independent if he lost the primary to Lamont. The war gives him another justification for doing so; he could certainly argue that as an Orthodox Jew, he intends on maintaining a strong voice for Israel in Congress.

At any rate, it certainly will motivate contributors who appreciate his strong support of Israel during any circumstances. It may also motivate others who oppose Israel to complain about a "Jewish conspiracy" in Connecticut. We can certainly look forward to some fireworks if the election plays out along the analysis by Susan Haigh.

31. Lamont could accuse him of flip-flopping
voted against Bolton last year, even filibustered him. Now voting for him.

It could happen, Lieberman could vote for Bolton, but the primary race will be a factor along with the Middle East war.
