Urgent need for ceasefire: Rice
Urgent need for ceasefire: Rice
24 July 2006 07:31

The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has said there is an urgent need for a ceasefire in Lebanon ...

Urgent apparently doesn't mean "let's get this done immediately"

Rice: Temporary ceasefire futile

Ahead of her visit to Israel, US secretary of state says that while truce between Israel, Lebanon is important goal, temporary cessation of fighting will not resolve Hizbullah threat to Israel

Yitzhak Benhorin

The time has come for diplomacy: In preparation for US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice's arrival in Israel, the US has accelerated political efforts to bring about a cessation of fighting in the region, but emphasizes that there is no point in negotiating a ceasefire without uprooting the source of the problem – Hizbullah ...

Meanwhile "ambassador" Bolton continues to exhibit his usual hostility towards any suggestion that diplomacy might be preferable to war:

US and Israel oppose Annan’s ceasefire call
Question over how to deal with Hezbollah

... Annan went before the Security Council on Thursday urging a halt to the fighting and support for a wide-ranging plan to end the war, saying hundreds of innocent civilians are being killed and injured. A ceasefire is essential to help over 500000 affected by the conflict and to give diplomacy a chance to produce a lasting solution, he said ...

US ambassador John Bolton said any talk of a cease-fire with Hezbollah was unrealistic ...

The Pope Calls for Ceasefire and Start of Negotiations Over Lebanon
Sunday, July 23, 2006 - 08:50 PM

Rome, July 23 (SANA)- His Holiness Pope Benedict IVX on Sunday renewed call for establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East as soon as possible and immediate ceasefire in Lebanon ...

Blair dismisses Archbishop's ceasefire call
Oliver King and agencies
Friday July 21, 2006
Guardian Unlimited

Tony Blair today dismissed increasing demands from the Archbishop of Canterbury and senior Labour MPs to back a UN call for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

The prime minister's official spokesman said a ceasefire call would only "make people feel good for a few hours" and would have no impact ...

1. And chaos is breaking out in the world
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 02:29 AM by DELUSIONAL
no one is in charge -- and the boy king has his head up his butt.

Meanwhile his court jester (with the high boots and whips, dressed on black leather) is riding to so "something" about this middle east problem.

GOP party of chaos -- they are spreading it all through the world. Where chaos did not exist -- they will import it.

By the way thanks for posting this news items with all the contradictions. It was simply mind boggling to read all the double speak and speak with da forked tongue all together. I guess the white guys forgot to check with each other before speaking to reporters. (CondiLiar is an honorary white guy -- she speak for them just like a good stenographer.)

2. They act like fire starters. Like those people who set fires
so they can get credit for putting them out.

I'm trying to figure out how these people will go about claiming that they brought peace to the Middle East -- because you know they'll try it.

Just your typical jet-setting jet-lagged tourist stopping by for a photo op. If it's Monday, it must be Beirut. And she smiles so much, totally out of context with the situation.

5. Progress, though small, is still progress.
at least she has apparently softened her stance that the israelis must be able to continue killing innnocent lebaneses while a cease-fire is negotiaied. i never understood why they couldn't stop shooting and then negotiate. seems to me that makes for more cordial relations around the bagaining table when your families aren't actively engaged in killing each other.

Saudis urge Bush to seek Lebanon ceasefire
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3280400,00.html

Saudi Foreign Minister following White House meeting with US president, secretary of state: We requested a ceasefire to allow the cessation of hostilities, rebuilding of the forces in Lebanon. Rice departs for region, set to meet with Olmert, Abbas

Top Saudi Arabian officials pressed President George W. Bush on Sunday to agree to seek a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hizbullah guerrillas in southern Lebanon.

“We requested a ceasefire to allow for the cessation of hostilities, to allow for the rebuilding of the forces of Lebanon,” Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told reporters in English after a meeting of more than an hour with Bush and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Bush has resisted calling for an immediate ceasefire, saying Israel has the right to defend itself and a cessation of hostilities must address the root causes of the conflict, including Hizbullah’s attacks on Israel and abduction of Israeli soldiers

Bush: Pressuring Hizbullah key in Mideast crisis
Bush blames Hizbullah for crisis, says Shiite group 'is no friend of Lebanon'
Reuters http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3279568,00.html

The United States will urge Middle East leaders to help boost pressure on Hizbullah as a means of solving the crisis in southern Lebanon, President George W. Bush said on Saturday.

Intense fighting between Israel and Hizbullah terrorists has prompted growing international calls for an immediate cease-fire.

The Bush administration has rejected that approach and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who leaves on Sunday for a trip to the region, said she would focus instead on finding a sustainable end to the violence.

Previewing Rice's trip in his weekly radio address, Bush said she would "make it clear that resolving the crisis demands confronting the terrorist group that launched the attacks and the nations that support it."

Bush cited the role of Iran and Syria in providing help to Hizbullah.

"Their actions threaten the entire Middle East and stand in the way of resolving the current crisis and bringing lasting peace to this troubled region," said Bush, who is spending the weekend at his Crawford ranch.

10. echo chamber
the echo chamber words/phrases for the current Israel/Lebanon war:

Clarity
Bush offered an insight into his dispassionate analysis of the situation, saying: "Sometimes it requires tragic situations to help bring clarity in the international community."

House counselor Dan Bartlett: 'He mourns the loss of every life. Yet out of this tragic development, he believes a moment of clarity has arrived."

Root Cause
Bush has resisted calling for an immediate ceasefire, saying Israel has the right to defend itself and a cessation of hostilities must address the root causes of the conflict, including Hizbullah’s attacks on Israel and abduction of Israeli soldiers.

However, Dr Rice, who is heading to the region for talks, said that any deal must address the root cause of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

12. Interesting how they bury the subject.
"Sometimes it requires"

What is it? And, you have to love the presstitutes: "Bush offered an insight into his dispassionate analysis". "Unfortunately, he couldn't offer it in any human language but we're sure it was insightful and dispassionate."

lol

19. BBC: US pushes for wider Middle East change
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5208762.stm
Last Updated: Monday, 24 July 2006, 05:41 GMT 06:41 UK

No immediate ceasefire is expected during the visit of the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the Middle East.

The effort to get a ceasefire is tied to a longer term ambition for American diplomacy in the region. However, if there is any hope that a cessation might come sooner rather than later, it lies in a shift in Ms Rice's language. Perhaps influenced by the images of civilian suffering, she is now talking of the need for an "urgent" ceasefire as well as the need for a lasting settlement.

<snip>

The background to the US position is the neo-conservative agenda for change in the Middle East. This is not just a question of giving Israel time to hammer Hezbollah.

The Bush administration sees in this crisis the chance of enforcing change by breaking Hezbollah and through that diminishing Syria and, above all, Iran.

According to the New York Times, Secretary Rice will aim to detach Syria from Iran and try to get Syria to put pressure on Hezbollah - the approach heralded by President Bush in his overheard conversation with Tony Blair at the G8 summit.

Rice arrives in Lebanese capital

Israelis are hinting at reassessing their aims

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, at the start of a Middle East tour to discuss the regional crisis.

She is expected to meet Lebanese leaders, including PM Fouad Siniora.
En route from Washington, Ms Rice said there was an "urgent" need for a ceasefire in Lebanon - but that conditions had to be right.

Ms Rice said there must be no place for "terrorist groups" like Hezbollah to launch attacks from Lebanese territory.

with Syria all along. The US ambassador to Syria was recalled last year. Another lie or does she really know what the hell she is doing? She can't get anything right. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing in Dumdum's administration. Cease fire, no cease fire, waffle waffle. Deliberatly designed to keep the US public in a quandry or can they all be so inept? I believe it's the former.
