More US troops for Baghdad as violence rages
More US troops for Baghdad as violence rages

BAGHDAD -- Fresh American troops are to be brought into Baghdad following the failure of a six-week-old security clampdown to quell a surge in sectarian violence in the capital, US officers said on Monday.

News of the redirected US units came as Iraq's embattled prime minister, Nuri Al Maliki, defended his government's efforts to win control of the country during his first official visit to key allies Britain and the United States.

But back home the violence raged on. Defense and health officials said that one Iraqi soldier was killed and two wounded on Monday in one of three Baghdad bombings in which one civilian was also killed.

The bodyguard of a Sunni politician was shot dead in west Baghdad, and the bodies of at least 23 murder victims were discovered, including eight found shot dead and dumped on the roadside in the southwest of the city.

1. MORE troops?
:wtf: Just a few weeks ago a smattering of Generals were crowing about troop withdrawals by the end of the year. Things were going so well over there, you know? :eyes:

I'm sure there will be some token withdrawal before the mid-term elections but that may even be in jeopardy now. Can't these Iraqis just knock it off until after the elections? Republicans everywhere are shitting themselves worrying about this. And after all we've done for those ungrateful Iraqis! :sarcasm:

3. Our military is beginning to sound like Hitler's general staff
towards the end of the war, with our Fuhrer shouting "No retreat!"

5. Is the US beefing up Baghdad because of the
violence occuring there or because the US gov't knows that the Israeli/Lebanon situation is going to kick into overdrive and Iran will be threatening Baghdad? I wonder.
