6. Why Does This Seem Like Some Sort Of Set-Up??? Is He
really a Democrat or just someone "posing" as a Democrat! You see, I've become way over the line "cynical" these days. I wouldn't put it past the Repukes to have someone out there stating he's a Dem, but all the while a Repuke.

I need MUCH MORE information & background on this one. I don't doubt that some Democrats can be THIS stupid, but right now??? Right before an election where the Dems seem to be gaining some ground?? I wonder.

I was afraid that the race might go to the Repub uncontested. Since they haven't had primaries yet there will still be a Dem running in November.

Hope she looses.

Repukes love running African-AMericans who care nothing about their hertitage and more about catering to rich white men. Steele actually had the audacity to compare Embryonic Stem Cell research to the Holocaust in front of a group of Jewish MD Leaders

Ben Cardin's practically got this thing locked up. Kwesi Mfume may give him a run, but scandal has heart his campaign -- not raping-your-wife level scandal, but you get the picture.

Background

It finally happened. Maryland's longest serving U.S. Senator ever, Democrat Paul Sarbanes, decided to quit on top. Undefeated after three House terms and five Senate terms, the quiet but effective legislator stepped down, reasonably certain that his seat would remain Democratic.

The early Democratic frontrunner in this Democratic state is Congressman Ben Cardin of Baltimore, who has gotten off to a strong start and raised a good deal of money. He is being opposed by former Baltimore congressman and ex-NAACP President Kweisi Mfume, who would be the second African-American Senator serving in the upcoming Senate, after Barack Obama of Illinois. Mfume's chances will depend heavily on the proportion of the African-American vote in the primary, and thus he will have to spend much time and money to generate a huge landslide in black precincts. The problem for Mfume is that he has raised very little cash, and he has been dogged by reports of his alleged sexual indiscretions during his NAACP stint.

Wealthy businessman Joshua Rales, who can fund his own campaign to the tune of $5 million or more, has also decided to take a dip into the Chesapeake Bay political waters. Clearly a long shot, Rales will depend upon the voters' desire for a new face and an outsider who has achieved success in the business community.

The sister of Fox News Channel commentator Greta Van Susteren, Lise Van Susteren, who is a forensic psychiatrist, is also running, and some other minor candidates may jump into the race.

The Republican nominee will likely be Lt. Governor Michael Steele. An Mfume-Steele contest would be only the second one ever with African-Americans as both major party nominees. The first was 2004's one-sided battle between Obama and Alan Keyes; oddly enough, Keyes was really a Marylander who had moved to the Land of Lincoln to make the Senate bid. Steele will be hard pressed to win if the nominee is someone like Ben Cardin. But, he will have at least a decent chance of upsetting Mfume. Also of importance will be the margin of victory or defeat for Steele's 2002 running mate, incumbent Republican Governor Bob Ehrlich. Feasibly, if Ehrlich wins by a large margin, he could pull Steele in with him, yet this scenario will be a difficult one to play out.

Stupid mistake: I had just read the paragraph right below BEFORE my eye caught her name, and I didn't take the time to get it right. Duhhhhh. Very embarrassing.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The only person I could remotely stand at Fox is Greta Van Susteren, and it's far more pleasant thinking her sister is truly a Democrat.

Sorry for the confusion.

U.S. Senate Candidate Charged With Rape, Assault

POSTED: 2:24 pm EDT July 24, 2006

TOWSON, Md. -- Baltimore County police arrested a candidate for the U.S. Senate and charged him with rape and assault on his Latvian wife.

David Dickerson, a Democratic candidate for one of the two Maryland Senate seats, was arrested Saturday after police were called to a hospital where his wife claimed she was raped. Dickerson was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense.

According to charging documents, the victim said she and her husband met in her home country of Latvia and married last year when she was 18. She told police that shortly after moving back to the United States, she was deprived of food and physically abused -- even after becoming pregnant.
(snip)

"The charges are completely fabricated, completely false and ludicrous. There is no violence between these two," Kadish said. "The wife has disappeared. She may be in New York. She has a history of mental breakdowns. She wants to stay in the country."

Who’ll get last licks in U.S. Senate race?
A home run in September may prove elusive for most of the 18 Democrats in the race; the GOP field is crowded too, but Steele has the national party’s nod

by Douglas Tallman

Staff Writer

Eighteen Democrats — the equivalent of today’s starting lineups for the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals — have filed campaign paperwork to be the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate race in November.

Each wants to succeed Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, who is retiring after five terms

Who, in his/her right mind is going to believe that a man who plans on a life as a politician is going to starve his wife? Beat her? They live far too much in public for him to be dragging around a starving, pregnant, beaten woman with him.

It sounds like absolute gibberish.

23. This is a non-factor from a minor candidate running for Senate
Even the DSCC pretty much is factor that either Prepresentative Ben Cardin or former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume will probably be the winner. Right now Cardin looks like he is ahead of Mfume but I'd really love to see Mfume in that seat just because of his history with George Bush.

But the thing is, anyone who gets enough signatures can run for office!
