Ah, this is some lovely news!

Gov. Confronted by Invited Guests at Campaign Event
By Robert Salladay, Times Staff Writer
12:19 PM PDT, July 25, 2006

LA MESA -- A campaign appearance by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today quickly turned into a bitter complaint session, with conservative voters visibly angry at him over illegal immigration, and a parole policy that one man said was letting murderers run free.

The San Diego County event, at a community park, was tightly controlled by Schwarzenegger campaign aides. But the invited audience turned on the governor multiple times, alternately booing and cheering during a question-and-answer session.

An El Cajon woman, who said she had been a Republican since the mid-1960s, chastised the governor for failing to secure the California-Mexico border and stopping immigrants who come here and "get everything free."

"I voted for you, and right now I don't see much difference between you and Phil Angelides," said the woman, Sally Plata, 66, referring to Schwarzenegger's Democratic opponent in the governor's race. "I don't see that you are standing up for the citizens of California."

3. I have to agree with the woman who doesn't see a great deal of difference
...between Schwarzenegger and Angelides.

OK, that WAS a bit tongue-in-cheek (insert the MILD sarcasm smilie here), but as a liberal Californian, I am rather underwhelmed by the Democrats' choice of gubernatorial candidate. I've said before that the 2006 California governor's race was the Democrats' to lose, and they just might manage to do that yet. Schwarzenegger had 30 percent approval ratings, and the true believers among California republicans-- never really his own base anyway-- are turning against him, but I'll bet that if Angelides wins it will be a squeaker. And he might very well not win.

Sorry, I know this reply is a bit OT, but I can't help but rant about this.

4. A Tale of Two Cities
Apparently Sally (not-my-real-last-name) Plata is only worried about her identity getting out NEAR the border. In the LA Times story, she's fully identified. This is from our local rag, the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“Right now, I don't see much difference between you and (Democratic nominee) Phil Angelides,” said a woman who identified herself only as Sally. She later declined to give her last name, saying she feared “repercussions” because of her involvement with the Minutemen border watch group."

6. Pretty soon they'll have to confine their appearances to studios
packed with guaranteed loyal or blackmailed followers, with very tight camera angles and pre-recorded large-crowd applause.

Ha!

7. They laughed derisively at that poor woman - no matter what her politics,
I felt sorry for her after the treatment she received by the rest of the people there.
