13. Well, let's put it this way....
It seems their "pin-point accuracy" we keep hearing about is either hitting a lot of targets accurately or there is an inordinate number of bombs hitting and killing innocent civilians and, now, even UN observers and ambulances due to oops.

Which one is it? Either they are indiscriminately bombing or they are hitting the targets they are pinpointing.

Also, it is only as pin-point as the people on the ground and command and control centers make it. We all make mistakes. In war, little mistakes happen to kill people.

15. Do you think it was their much self-lauded "Precision Targeting"?
You have to pick one or the other, and they both lead to the same place... or, you can just say they are apparently just bombing the hell out of anything without checking to see what it is they're bombing... which also leads to the same place...

They can spin spin spin all they want, as can their apologists. They jumped the shark days and days ago.

35. So 'precision', it took 14 shots to hit the post
"One aerial bomb directly impacted the building and shelter in the base of the United Nations Observer Group in Lebanon in the area of Khiam," said Milos Strugar, a UNIFIL spokesman.

"There are casualties among the observers. A UNIFIL dispatched rescue team which is on the spot is still unable to clear the rubble," he said.

"There were 14 other incidents of firing close to this position in the afternoon from the Israeli side and the firing continued during the rescue operation," he said.

...I guess we can't complain. Carry on!

Attack on UN Compound at Qana, 18 April 1996

<snip>

"The head quarters compound of the Fijian battalion of UNIFIL in Qana was attacked by IDF artillery shortly after 2pm on 18 April. At the time, there were over 800 Lebanese civilians inside the compound; 102 of them were killed and hundreds were wounded. In addition, four UNIFIL personnel were wounded.

Eye-witness accounts and television pictures of the attack and resulting devastation shocked people around the world. The UN Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, immediately sent his Military Adviser to investigate the incident and to identify steps that could be taken to prevent a recurrence. The resulting report of Major-General Franklin van Kappen, formally transmitted to the UN Security Council on 7 May 1996, concluded:

While the possibility cannot be ruled out completely, it is unlikely that the shelling of the United Nations compound was the result of gross technical and/or procedural errors."

98. Not only were they clearly marked...
...but on cnn today there was a converstation with someone from the UN (I don't recall who). That person stated that at the outbreak of hostilities the UN was in communication with Israel to make sure that the UN observers would be safe where they were, that they would not be targetted. Israel gave their word that the UN outpost would be safe. :grr:

Yeah, this was intentional and it is a war crime.

It sure looks like a direct hit. But I can't figure out why they would do this intentionally. It'll heighten international condemnation, alienate the UN, & make it harder for the US to support Israel. So what's the benefit?

72. Sounds right
But they supposedly want a UN/multi-national force to occupy the "buffer zone" in S. Lebanon. How is that going to happen if they keep angering the UN? Maybe they're just lying about that & want Israel to occupy the land themselves - but they still wouldn't need to bomb the UN building to do that. It reminds me a lot of what US troops did during Fallujah - not allowing journalists to enter the city, keeping out humanitarian aid & international organizations. All to keep independent observers out. I'm worried that there is a massacre in store here. Really.

82. To remove U.N. observers
from their post so that they are unable to report on the many Israeli violations occurring at any given minute. It's just that simple. And since they have the backing and sympathy of the United States, and the U.N. is not too popular with the current USA government, I'm sure they're quite confident they can get away with it. And the sad thing is that they're probably right.

is that Hezbollah isn't exactly what it is made out to be.

It would not be the first time that terrorist attacks ascribed to some "radical" anti-establishment group are (at least in part) false flag operations.

Hizbollah's been around a long, long, time. Since the Lebanese civil war, at least. So Israel created an Islamic militia to build a flght of missiles & harass n. Israel for 20 years? To capture Israeli soldiers, build Islamic propaganda & hatred of Israel, & bomb Israeli embassies? To justify an invasion 20 years later? Please. Maybe you should inform Iran, Syria & the Shiite Muslims that have supported Hizbollah about it's "super-secret" origins.

107. To justify ongoing conflict.
Manufactured enemies always come in handy.

I'm not saying this is the case with Hezbollah, i'm saying there are a well documented precedents.
Red Army Faction, among others. Would the Italian Secret Service bomb Italian train stations and blame it on the Italian Left? Well, they did. The so called militant/extreme/radical Left is a creation of secret agencies. Uncovered by multiple congressional and judicial investigations. And that's just one example.
All i can say is that the BBC isn't into far-fetched tinfoil hattery.

60. The UN Thinks So:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/25/mideast.main/index.html

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said he was "deeply distressed" by the "apparently deliberate" strike.

"This coordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long-established and clearly marked U.N. post at Khiyam occurred despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that U.N. positions would be spared Israeli fire," he said in a statement.

"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the U.N. force commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular U.N. position from attack."

'Three of the U.N. stations along the border had been hit by Israeli artillery, and the organization was unable to move desperately needed aid convoys onto roads that were coming under heavy bombardment, he said.'

And the bases aren't large.

I'll wait for the final report before assigning blame to faulty targeting, wilful killing of Indians there under the UN aegis, or Hezbollah's either assuming that there's safety behind human shields or assuming that the resulting death toll to civilians or UN folk will be automatically imputed to Israel.

So NATO troops (American proxies) can move in to the region. Eventually the NATO troops will be mostly U.S. troops, and they will be nicely positioned to threaten/invade Syria/Iran.

Israeli shell hits UN base in S. Lebanon

BEIRUT (Reuters) - An Israeli aerial bomb destroyed a base run by a U.N. observer force in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, causing casualties, a U.N. spokesman said.

"One aerial bomb directly impacted the building and shelter in the base of the United Nations Observer Group in Lebanon in the area of Khiam," said Milos Strugar, spokesman for the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in the area.

"There are casualties among the observers. A UNIFIL dispatched rescue team which is on the spot is still unable to clear the rubble."

Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 04:33 PM by God Almighty
If it used the same standards as the Israeli government, the UN would now bomb Israel. No, wait. Lebanon did not bomb Israel. So, the UN would be more justified in taking out Israel than Israel is in doing what it is now doing.

99. The UN post has clearly been in touch
with the Israelis concerning safety concerns and regarding their position. The IDF is well aware of where the UN installation is located. It is very well marked as are UN ambulances. I believe the UN has been in this location for more than several months. There is no excuse for the outrageous assault on this UN post. Israel has gained the reputation for either ignoring these unbiased observors or a military that just doesn't give a damn.

40. War is never a solution
how quickly we collectively forget that.

War cannot be controlled. It is a rampaging beast that sweeps up humans in death and violence. It cannot be contained once released. It runs its course, debases both parties involved, and destroys everything in its path. The UN geting attacked is testament to this effect.

The decision to engage in war should never be taken lightly, but once taken, all responsibility for death mayhem, destruction, carnage ,and dehumanization rest squarely on the Pandora that released this force.

War can only be declared by a nation, so which nations can be blamed for unleashing war in the middle East (that's unleashing, not provoking)?

because, of course, it was his citizens primarily being killed and he had to live in the country after the war was fought. Also Churchill didn't unleash that particular war, if I recall. That distinction lies with Hitler.

71. Canadian among UN observers feared dead in southern Lebanon
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called upon the Israeli government to launch an investigation into an air strike that killed as many as four UN peacekeepers — one a Canadian — in southern Lebanon on Tuesday.

"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN observer post in southern Lebanon that has killed two UN military observers, with two more feared dead," Annan said from Rome.

The bomb made a direct hit on the building and shelter of the observer post in the town Khiyam near the eastern end of the border with Israel, said Milos Struger, spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon known as UNIFIL. Canada is not a member of UNIFIL.

Trapped in the rubble

The other victims are from Austria, China and Finland. A UN official in New York City, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said four people were confirmed killed, while Lebanese security officials said two bodies remained trapped in the rubble.

85. Looks like this is definitive proof that harper is, indeed, one of the
wingnuts:

"Harper also said the government intends to look closely at the rights and responsibilities of dual Canadian citizens.

Some politicians and Lebanese evacuees have contended that long-standing Lebanese residents with Canadian citizenship were taking advantage of Canadian evacuation efforts.

Harper noted that the government made no distinction "on this particular occasion" between passport holders who normally reside in Canada and those residing in Lebanon."

87. Imagine next emergency
Soldiers can be checking passports at the dock, directing some people onto the ship and others away from the ship, based on whether or not they have dual citizenship (loyalty test). In some families, half of the children might have been born in Canada, half in the previous country of citizenship. Parents and children, brothers and sisters will have to go their separate ways, some to safety and some back to the bombs.

Do wingnuts really want a future like that? Don't they ever think things through?

94. The irony is, the countries with the greatest numbers of dual citizens
From 1997 data, were U.S., U.K., Poland, Italy and Portugal. So, it is by no means restricted to non-white immigrants. I suspect plenty of corporate people and other big shots find it more convenient to have dual citizenship, for example.

http://www.statcan.ca/Daily/English/971104/d971104.htm

Canadians with dual citizenship
Only a small proportion of the population in 1996, about 3%, had dual or multiple citizenship, up from 2% in 1991. Dual or multiple citizenship refers to holding citizenship in two or more countries. Canada has recognized dual citizenship since 1977.

Most people with dual citizenship were naturalized Canadian citizens who had retained the citizenship of their country of birth, or of another country. In 1996, one in every five naturalized Canadians (17%) had dual citizenship with Canada. The countries of citizenship most likely to be held, along with Canada, were the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, the United States and Portugal.

One of the conditions for a cease-fire the Israelis asked for was a U.N. peacekeeping force along the Israel-Lebanon border.

This incident is gonna make it a lot harder to get it. The United Nations won't send peacekeepers if the Israelis can't guarantee their safety.
