ABC/AP : 12 Israeli Troops Killed in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Lebanon Jul 26, 2006 (AP)— Hezbollah fighters battled Wednesday to stop Israeli forces from capturing a southern Lebanese town, leaving 12 Israeli soldiers dead, Al-Arabiya television reported.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli military would say no more than several soldiers had been wounded in heavy fighting in Bint Jbail.

Al-Arabiya, a Dubai-based satellite TV channel, said the soldiers were killed as Israeli forces tried to gain control of the town, which is known for its intense support of Hezbollah.

3. 25 soldiers injured in Bint Jbeil
Battles rage since morning hours in Hizbullah’s south Lebanon ‘capital.’ Soldiers report short-range fire, face to face combat, setting off of explosives, and missile fire. Fire ceases during afternoon hours, and injured soldiers begin to arrive at northern hospitals

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3281683,00.html

<snip>

"Air force helicopters which cleared the injured from the intense battle raging in Bint Jbeil Wednesday began landing at the Rambam hospital in Haifa, and wounded soldiers have been taken to the trauma room.

At least 25 soldiers were injured in battles in the town dubbed as Hizbullah's ‘capital,’ in one of the most bitter battles the IDF has known in recent years; three soldiers sustained serious wounds, two others were moderately wounded while the rest were lightly hurt in the fighting.

IDF sources said an extremely difficult phase of the battle developed when soldiers encountered terrorists face to face, accompanied by the setting off of explosives and the firing of various missiles.

Many terrorists apparently operated in the area and launched a combined attack against IDF forces. In the course of fighting a number of terrorists were killed."

6. Might mean "combined arms", like rockets and infantry.
Could also mean "coordinated attack", hard to tell.

7. I don't read all the papers
but I the ones I do read, the NYT and my local gannett rag, have not had a pro Israeli bias to either their stories or the photos they've run.

8. Our local paper, the Ottawa Citizen has been rabidly pro-Israeli
But the paper is owned by the Aspers, a notoriously pro-Likud family (CanWest Global).

I can't even read the paper any more, even the editorial cartoons are disgustlingly one-sided propaganda.

These are the same folks who started the "Iranian Jews forced to wear yellow stars" lie.

15. Yes, it is rather surprising, isn't it?

But I'm sure it's coming.
Edited to marvel -- Isn't it remarkable that those who will come out for a thread like this will never go near a thread about dead Lebanese children? Remarkable. Truly.

9. Looks like Israel bit off a bit more than it can chew
The Likudniks must be gnashing their teeth in frustration. And that makes me happy.

11. Battle rages for Lebanese town
Haaretz also reports 5 wounded in Maroun al Ras. The casualty rates seem quite high, you have to wonder what is going on.

Thirteen Israeli soldiers have been killed and 12 wounded in fighting with Hezbollah in a southern Lebanese town, Aljazeera's correspondent in Lebanon says.

---

Israeli media said as many as 30 soldiers had been wounded.

---

But Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader, said in a television broadcast on Wednesday that the town - home to 4,000 people - was not in Israeli hands.

"They do not control Bint Jbeil. All the city of Bint Jbeil is still in the hands of the resistance," he said.

17. CNN: Israeli troops suffer largest one-day loss
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/26/mideast.main/index.html

Quit it everyone, quit killing each other. Or, if you have to, do it 1 on 1 with another person who wants to kill you.

War is hell and karma is a bitch.
I certainly hope their deaths were quick and painless. God forbid if they were victims of white phosphorous or some other sort of protracted, painful, indiscriminate death...

20. the mighty Israeli Army....
....isn't quite so mighty when fighting one-on-one with determined people equally armed....it's much easier killing old men, women and children from the air with missles and bombs....

I feel for their families, and the families of any Lebanese they may have killed.
