Lieberman's side, Ned Lamont resumed chipping away at the senator's liberal credentials, cultivating Connecticut activists unimpressed with Lieberman's record on abortion and gay rights.
Over drinks at the Pond House in Hartford's Elizabeth Park, activists who have worked on passing state legislation legalizing civil unions for gay couples and safeguarding abortion rights attended a $50-a-ticket fundraiser Tuesday night for Lamont, a challenger known as an anti-war candidate.

We've seen politicians tiptoe around this issue," she said. "When we asked Ned about gay marriage, he said, `Yes, of course.'"
She said Lieberman seemed sympathetic during a meeting with gay couples and straight allies, but a week later he told the New Haven Advocate he could not support gay marriage.

Rep. Denise Merrill, D-Mansfield, said she led a group of state legislators to meet with Lieberman on the Alito nomination. Like Stanback, she said she left her meeting believing that Lieberman was in agreement - in this case, ready to lead the fight against a nominee who could shift the balance on the court against abortion rights.
But Lieberman declined to lead the filibuster. Merrill, a longtime Lieberman supporter, concluded that she no longer truly knew the senator.
