Nations can't agree on Lebanon cease-fire

Nations can't agree on Lebanon cease-fire

By VICTOR L. SIMPSON, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago

ROME - U.S., European and Arab officials holding crisis talks on Lebanon failed to agree Wednesday on an immediate plan to halt the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.

Although officials called for an end to the violence, Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice said there cannot be a return to a "status quo" of political uncertainty and instability in Lebanon. She said any cease-fire must be "sustainable."

U.N. Secretary-General
Kofi Annan said the solution to the Mideast crisis should involve
Iran and
Syria. He also called for the formation of a multinational force to help Lebanon assert its authority and implement U.N. resolutions that would disarm Hezbollah.

After listening to a dramatic appeal from Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora for them to stop the killing, the officials said they had agreed on the need to deploy an international force under the aegis of the
United Nations in southern Lebanon........

1. How about something SIMPLE?
Just a CEASE FIRE?

Just stop the killing, maiming and dying?

That's NOT difficult, why does Condi have to turn it into a MENSA project just to attain a CEASE FIRE? :grr:

2. Because the Princess of Death is 'workin' hard' to keep her title.
She must have more blood and death or her crown might slip.

3. LOL Mensa project. That is a great analogy.
I love it when people can cut through the bullshit with one simple analogy. Good work.

4. How bout' not...
People wanted a cease fire as soon as Israel responded to Hizbullah's brazen cross border raid in which they murdered and kidnapping Israeli soldiers.

That was an act of war perpetrated by Hizbullah. Israel has every right to degrade Hizbullah to the point it is no longer militarily able to pull such a stunt again. It's a shame Hizbullah flourishes in Lebanon, but such is life. Lots of Germans and Japanese - perhaps the majority - didn't want to fight WWII against the United States, but we didn't hold back because of it. When a nation is attacked it has every right to fight seriously with the aim of winning. Winning is smashing the mililary capacity of Hizbullah.

I strongly support Israel in this conflict, and so do the overwhelming, vast majority of our Democratic representatives. Some on DU can howl all they wish, but this pathetic whining about Israel rightfully responding to an attack all too often found here is, thankfully, not shared by most elected Democrats

5. The israeli soldiers captured were inflitrating lebanon,
so by your logic hezbollah are fully justified in randomly rocketing israel, since they didnt start it.

6. No...
Hizbullah conducted a cross border raid and killed and kidnapped Israeli soldiers. The intent was to grab two Israeli's to be used as barter material in a future prisoner exchange. Even Hizbullah has admitted to this when detailing how they thought the Lebanese government was in agreement with them on this and how they were suprised with Israel's fierce reaction.

Please show me a single legitimate news source that claims the Israeli's were kidnapped while inside Lebanon. I don't want nonsense from Chomsky or some other dubious source either. Oh yeah, in case you were planning to claim the Sheb'a Farms is Lebanese territory - the UN has quite clearly ruled in favor of Israel on this and stated quite clearly that Israel had infact completely withdrawn from Lebanese territory.

This entire war, and all the dead civilians that have resulted from it, is the fault of Hizbullah.

7. Then Please try to see beyond "the fierce reaction" now
to the fact that the continued killing of innocents is unwarranted. Mostly innocent people are being killed. Please, I beg Israel, to be a compassionate victor. Can not Israel show mercy? This is too much killing and dying. But don't take my word for it, notice how Israel is getting criticized throughout the world?

Please Israeli Leaders, work with Lebanon to work out a Cease Fire - IF ONLY to STOP THE KILLING OF THE INNOCENTS?

9. Israel is not the victor....yet.
When Israel achieves her military goals, then they can proceed to be a charitable and magnanimous in victory.

Military victory is degrading Hizbullah to the point it no longer has a rocket arsenal or a significant military capacity (which they are NOT supposed to have anyway per UN resolutions).

When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, we didn't just seize some little island somewhere or bomb 1 Japanese city and then stop. America fought on to victory regardless of how bloody.

Ya, it is sad civilians are dying. Really is a crying shame. Unfortunantly, innocents die in war. Always have, always will.

I suggest you email Hizbullah and plead with them to return the Israeli soldiers they kidnapped and to disarm per UN resolutions. When Hizbullah completely ignores you, go ahead and rage away at them.

Every single civilian death as a result of this war is directly the fault of Hizbullah. None of this would have started had Hizbullah not launched a cross border raid and killed and kidnapped Israeli soldiers. None of it.

11. Kill'em all, let God sort it out!
There is no longer any reason for peaceful conflict resolution and any action can and will be justified. Innocents don't matter we're in total militaristic war mood and therefore, you MUST KILL THEM ALL.

:sarcasm: if necessary

with nation states. :nuke:

God Bless the poor innocents who are always the victims of war.

13. What a load of crap.
"Every single civilian death as a result of this war is directly the fault of Hizbullah."

Ooh, the poor IDF just had to respond to a pinprick provocation with all-out war. Israel's leaders have deliberately escalated this conflict of their own free will and they, along with Hezbollah, are responsible for the death and destruction they are wreaking, including the Israelis being injured and killed in Hezbollah's tit-for-tat rocketings.

People need to step out of their cheerleading roles on this.

19. It's the same rationale used by US to justify killing civilians
Our brave Crusaders claim that the insurgents hide behind the civilian population and that's why we had no choice but to firebomb Fallujah and Ramadi.

16. "Who started it" is irrelevant, and frankly, a little...
... childish at this point. If you think that Israel will benefit from these (re)actions, then I believe you misunderstand your enemy. They count on us, and Israel, reacting a certain way, and we never seem to let them down. I swear, the whole Islamo-gang has an uncanny ability in pulling just the right chains. O. Bin-forgotten seems to have gotten his 3 wishes.

21. How does bombing a dairy "degrade Hizbullah"?
Or bombing apartment blocks in Beirut, or bombing cell phone antennas in the Maronite Christian part of Lebanon? I don't understand the connection between a dairy and Hizbullah. Explain please.

15. I thought the same thing:"What part of 'cease fire' don't you understand?"
I mean, "cease fire" occurs when bullets stop coming out of the gun.

It's like the "we can't pull out of Iraq now" argument. Why? I have to ask: We sure as Hell went in at a pretty brisk clip.

There are only two nations on this planet opposed to a ceasefire: Israel and America!
