Harper's: Former official says Bush mulling sending American troops to Leb
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 07:15 PM by banana republican
"well-connected former CIA officer" has told Harper's Magazine Washington bureau chief that the Bush Administration is considering deploying US troops to Lebanon, according to a post at the magazine's website (RAW STORY has excerpted the post below because the site loads slowly when we link directly). Harper's post is here.

<snip>

The uniformed military, however, is ardently opposed to sending American soldiers to the region, according to my source. “They are saying 'What the fuck?'” he told me. “Most of our combat-ready divisions are in Iraq or Afghanistan, or on their way, or coming back. The generals don't like it because we're already way overstretched.”

2. What What What???

Reminds me of that scene from Der Untergang ("Downfall") when chimpy's hero Adolph in his bunker towards the end starts ordering troops he doesn't have or have been decimated already...

Kidding aside. I certainly hope that they have their "heart in the right place" cause I wouldn't mind having someone oversee the situation there and keep the peace (Like Finland) or at least monitor WTF Israel is doing, but I have a problem trusting this administration with complex military problems that don't involve killing or torturing civilians and subjecting random people to detention without trial.

3. Where are these troops going to come from?
I thought the big new offensive in Baghdad was going to take up most of the available soldiers.

6. I think we should ...
Give Jenna, Laura and Noelle with a hand grenade and send them over. Is that a start?

5. The law gives him the authority for brief deployments, I believe
Just one more good reason that we voted against him.
