Israel holds Canadian accused of being Hezbollah spy
The family of a professor accused of being a Hezbollah spy says the Canadian government has abandoned them as they try to learn more about his fate.

Gahzi Falah, a professor at the University of Akron in Ohio who formerly taught at the University of Toronto, was arrested in northern Israel near the Lebanese border in early July. Falah has both Canadian and Israeli citizenship.

"I've seen more effort done by the American government than I have from the Canadian government, and we are not American citizens," he said.

2. whoa - saw that story here last week

Didn't see the update that he's a Canadian.

Unfortunately for him, he has maintained dual citizenship -- Canadian and Israeli. Israel is entitled to treat him as one of its nationals and Canada can't really do much about it. He undoubtedly entered Israel on his Israeli passport -- not as a foreign national, but as an Israeli.

That doesn't relieve Canada of its obligation to its citizens, nonetheless. Internationally, Canada has no real claim to him, against Israel as a third party, when he is in Israel as an Israeli citizen, but as between Canada and him, he is as entitled to expect efforts on his behalf as any other Canadian.

4. Harper doesn't care about Canadians
Although anyone with dual citizenship is taking a chance when they go to the other country in which they have citizenship. It is the downside of maintaining dual citizenship.

6. Court: Either free or indict Canadian suspected of spying
<snip>

"The Haifa District Court ordered the police and the Shin Bet security service Thursday to either free Ghazi Falah, an Israeli-Canadian geography professor arrested on espionage charges in early July, or to indict him by Sunday.

Falah, an Israeli-Canadian geography professor, was arrested by the Shin Bet on July 12 on suspicion of spying for Hezbollah and Iranian intelligence. He has not been informed of the suspicions against him or of what evidence the authorities have against him.

A tenured professor at the University of Akron in the United States, Falah is a renowned expert in Middle East geography.

The police and Shin Bet say that Falah photographed a military antenna near Rosh Hanikra and visited Tehran and Beirut. Falah confirms these facts, but says that his trips were for academic purposes.

His attorney, Hussein Abu Hussein, said that his client was unaware that the antenna - which is about 100 meters tall and visible to all - was a military facility."
