Zawahri: We must fight 'Zionists and crusaders'
Al-Qaida's second in command weighs in on Mideast conflict in new video BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 3 minutes ago
CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader warned in a new videotape released Thursday that the terrorist group would not stand idly by while Israeli bombardments “burn our brothers” in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

In the message broadcast by Al-Jazeera television, Ayman al-Zawahri, second in command to Osama bin Laden, said that al-Qaida now saw “all the world as a battlefield open in front of us.”

The Egyptian-born physician said the Hezbollah and Palestinian battles against Israel would not be ended with “cease-fires or agreements.” The fighting began last month following a Palestinian cross-border raid in which an Israeli soldier was captured, then expanded to Lebanon after Hezbollah militants captured two other soldiers in a raid earlier this month.

What a relief! I thought he had been killed again.

20. Not once.
Keep your guys straight. It's hard, with all those funny names, I know. :eyes:

al-Zawahri/Zawahiri (depending if you want to write the epenthetic i or not) has been AQ's #2 since the '90s, in charge of most operations. UBL is essentially the top dog, and since his 'spiritual advisor', a Muslim cleric, bit the big one he's been functioning as the spiritual and motivational leader of the group. UBL's probably also in charge of big-dog fundraising, as opposed to dealing with institutional representatives to have zakat funneled to individual operations.

I do know who we are discussing. My point was that he had been hoped to have been captured or killed on multiple occasions (hence the rather outlandish number 37 times).

You might be thinking of al-Zarqawi (actually, az-Zarqawi, just like az-Zawahiri and as-Sadr, but for some reason in transliteration we keep the ل even though in pronunciation it assimalates). Lots of people have names that in transliteration start with "z".

Zawahiri is an operations director; he runs most of the charitable work and allocates resources for the "martyrdom operations". Basically, he spends the money that OBL raises. Or that's how it looked before we blew our own intel capability on them to hell.

28. The media put this guy in mothballs
till Zarqawi was "killed." The similarity in names was confusing the sheep who couldn't distinguish 2 boogeymen. They rolled him out briefly after Zarqawi's death which again, confused the sheep further. Now enough time has elapsed that the new product line is being rolled out. It IS August, eh? There will still be confusion but the new, improved bogeyman will take his place front and center.

Please change your subject line to read:
Zawahri: We must fight 'Zionists and crusaders'

LBN rules state that the article title and subject line must match exactly.

One reason for doing this is to avoid duplicates.

Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 06:09 AM by Cooley Hurd

I thought that al Qaeda was on the run, hiding from cave to cave? This looked like it was filmed in a studio.

7. Unless this guy is actually an actor, playing the role of Zahwahri, and
being raised from the dead like in a soap opera.

I've had my suspicions since the very beginning that al Quaida is a PNAC, Neocon construct which is pulled out of the old costume trunk whenever the masses of people are not sufficiently fearful of some unnammed, unnamable terror. Like the bogeyman under the bed or the monsters in the closet.

This last video dialogue insures that now, all nations should join in a global FEAR of and war against TERROR!

As I remember, most children who fear the bogeyman and the closet monsters have to grow out of that fear. Maybe we need to grow up to see that there really are no monsters and bogeymen. Just other human beings.

Al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri, died Thursday in an explosion in the North Waziristan tribal area, and his remains were identified in DNA tests, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said.

Two U.S. counterterrorism officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the information's sensitivity, confirmed Rabia's death but would not elaborate on the circumstances.

The officials said Rabia was believed to be an Egyptian and head of Al Qaeda's foreign operations, possibly as senior as the No. 3 official in the terrorist group. That would put him in a tier just below Usama bin Laden and al-Zawahri.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — One of Al Qaeda's top five leaders, said to be responsible for planning overseas strikes, was killed by Pakistani security forces in a rocket attack near the Afghan border with U.S. help, American and Pakistani officials said Saturday.

Hamza Rabia, a key associate of Al Qaeda No.

"He was Al Qaeda's No. 5 and this is what we know," Ahmed told The Associated Press.

Rabia filled the vacuum created this year by the capture of the previous operations chief, Abu Faraj al-Libbi, the two U.S. officials said.

heard on the news that Zahwari has been captured or killed several times. Then, after killing scores of innocents, he is miraculously revived and left to be shot at again.

Or... Maybe I have him mixed up with someone else. "You know, their names all sound alike to me.":sarcasm:

29. Let's say that on one day it would be reported on msm that a house was
bombed or in some way attacked because Zahwari was supposed to be in that house. It was reported that X number of men, women and children also died in said attack.

Then it would be said that his body was not found because it was taken away by some of his supporters, who somehow, miraculously arrived in time to go through the rubble, find his body and cart it away before the attackers could get across the street to the house they had just attacked.

Then, on the third day it would be reported that it was unclear whether or not he had been killed. But the deaths of the innocent children in the house would be justified, because the attackers THOUGHT Zahwari was in the house. And that alone was Reason enough to destroy it and all who resided within. Thus, Zahwari would live only to die again.

These are the reports that we all heard and often laughed about right here on DU, so if you don't remember them, what can I say?

You could look it up...maybe google?

I really don't consider this point important enough for me to try to dig up links for you or anything - so if you want facts...sorry....cause right now you seem to be the only person in this thread questioning his oft-repeated deaths and rebirths in the media.

18. I'm sorry, but your theory is just way off.
Al Qaeda is not a PNAC MacGuffin. It is a very real organization with very real motives and goals, specifically the restoration of the Islamic khilifah (caliphate) within the muslim umma (world community of islam). Their origins predate PNAC and they will likely have child organizations that persist long after PNAC and its members are dust. Indeed, Al Qaeda actually traces its origin to a series of philosophical and poetic works published in the first half of the 20th century, for what it's worth.

Now a relationship of convenience has grown up between PNAC and Al Qaeda. They both use situations the other creates to advance their goals. Their relationship is symbiotic. And they may not even totally realize how dependent on one another they are.

But Al Qaeda a PNAC puppet? No.

11. this conflict only helps extremist groups
to quote Ariana Huffington's blog:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna-huffington/winning-the-war-on-terror_b_25864.html

...At the moment, Israel, displaying a Bush-like lack of imagination, is only focusing on trying to destroy Hezbollah's tools. Tools that can -- and will eventually -- be replenished.

And, in the process, they are feeding the extremists' imagination. As Wayne White, a State Department analyst until last year, told Harper's: "From a large and enraged Shiite population, surely there will be thousands of recruits ready to replace Hezbollah's losses in personnel...The Israelis have embarked on a campaign that will most likely make matters worse over the long term."

So even if Israel is completely right, its current strategy is having the wholly counterproductive effect of making its people less safe and less likely to achieve the long-term peace and security they long for.

21. Which is why an extremist group triggered it.
On the other hand, not having this conflict would also help extremist groups.

Such is life.

As for whether Israel's strategy will have the "wholly counterproductive effect of making its people less safe and less likely to achieve the long-term peace and security they long for," that remains to be seen. "Surely" actually implies doubt.

23. My doubt
is in human nature. I think there is a large element on both sides who want to kill off all the other side. They are so filled with hatred they don't see that, with the quality of weapons they both have, annihilation is likely to happen, but not just to them-but the entire world.

61. That remains to be seen.
The quotes in the articles don't support all of the writer's statements.

Other quotes plausibly say something rather different. Hezbollah isn't the focus: jihad by the ummah against the Jews and apostate rulers is one focus, and the killing of Muslims by the Zionists and crusaders is the other focus. The quotes so far do not say Hezbollah is Muslim; if they did, *that* would be news.

At least Andalusia returned to the discourse.

And you're right, I was overreacting without reading the story closely enough. He didn't say Hezbollah was part of the Umma. That's positive (or at least not cripplingly negative) for us, so far.

Basically this is what they are saying: "War with Israel is a jihad for God's sake and will last until (our) religion prevails." al-Zawahri said. "We will attack everywhere."

I don't think I need to comment on this - it kind of says it all, doesn't it.

RFK Jr. covers it in fine detail here: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/10432334/was_the_2004_election_stolen

Currently RFK Jr. and Mike Papantonio are now suing Ohio. And just FYI, Mike Papantonio is the guy who won that $200,000,000 anti-tobacco lawsuit.

Impeach!!!

45. I know. That is exactly how I feel.
I don't care who is right or wrong. I just want them to quit the fighting. I can't take any more pictures of those poor people crying and in shock. It is too awful

48. I really wouldn't be surprised if we have a day...
...in this country where multiple suicide bombs and house-to-house urban warfare is unleashed on this country.

...not a bit surprised.

53. Yeh right............
Don't believe it's real for a minute. Just another fake threat to get the American people all inspired to fight the "evil terrorists" wherever they might exist. (1% doctrine anyone?)

69. This is just the beginning.....
of the "Long War".

1st USA goes after Afghanistan
Up next is IRAQ
Next is Israel's turn w/ Lebanon
USA hopes for Syria/Iran intervention or provacation. Then we back up our allies or confront WMD's in Iran
Bottom line is to control the oil fields with the gracious help of friends Saudi Arabia

My guess 15 - 25 years of this. Vote democrat all you want. This is a one party state.

or maybe I'm just in a pissy mood. Take your pick.
