1. Attacks in Upscale Part of Baghdad Kill 31
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Mortars, rockets and a car bomb blasted Baghdad's upscale Karradah district Thursday, killing at least 31 people and wounding 153, police said. The explosions occurred at midmorning in the religiously mixed neighborhood controlled by a major Shiite party, as the United States and Iraq prepared to send more troops to fight rising sectarian violence in the capital.

. . .

The explosion occurred about 200 yards from the house of Vice President Adil Abdul-Mahdi, a senior figure in the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, the country's biggest Shiite party. One of the mortars exploded about 150 yards from SCIRI's headquarters in Karradah.

Police said at least two rockets were used in the attack, the largest in Karradah in about a year. The mostly Shiite neighborhood also is home to President Jalal Talabani and SCIRI leader Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim.
