Hecklers Disrupt Bolton Confirmation Hearing
Bolton Serves As Acting Ambassador Since Last Year

<snip>

Two protesters stood up as the Foreign Relations Committee began questioning Bolton.

"I strongly oppose the nomination of this man, John Bolton, as U.N. ambassador," one of the two women yelled. "He is a disgrace to the United States (and) he is not a ligitimate representative of the United States. He is not representing our best interests."

Both women were removed from the room.

5. wrong. see: initiative
many states have one of the purest form of direct democracy there is.

initiative

that is the clearest and most basic way to have a POV represented. no intermediary/representative needed

in my state, it is actually written into the State Constitution (WA) that a citizen passed initiative is the highest form of law. iow, when it arguably contradicts a law passed by the legislature, deference is given to the initiative OVER the legislative law

now, many initiatives you may not agree with. but that's democracy

Edited on Fri Jul-28-06 10:51 AM by maxsolomon
i live in Wa State, too.

the initiative process has been hijacked & perverted to serve a narrow, selfish constituency.

what has it brought us? $50 ferry rides. crumbling streets. endless votes on higher property taxes to fund basic needs. a legislature too scared to do the right thing, or worse, apathetic because they know their work can be undone the next november at the caprice of a narcissist horse's ass named Tim Eyman.

7. I've noticed this but will go one further
I hate calling them "hecklers" at all. Hecklers tell you "you suck" or other such insult - these people are attempting to express their 1st amendment rights to the people who are supposed to represent them and don't.

hm. taxation without representation sounds familiar...

And they were considered quite heroic in the west. Perhaps it is time to take that term out of storage.

19. You are right.
If the Americans have to resort to this, what does that tell you? This is exactly what has happened in many other meetings, hearings. Like the one with Don Rumsfailed, where he got trounced by the former CIA analyst.

That's what it's come to -

11. "Hecklers" belittles their brave, heroic action
Right-wing framing being swallowed whole by a stupid press. These brave women are standing up and saying what is on the minds of most people but not being "allowed" to be said in these hearings. And how disgraceful that this article should end with "Bolton is expected to be confirmed permanently to his position."

They said it best, "He is not representing our best interests." Watch that blow right over the heads of the committee members.

This is why ordinary citizens should be allowed to speak on the floor of the House and Senate. Not people from special interest groups, mind you, but ordinary citizens, which has nothing to do with special interest groups.

27. I like the word heckle!
It has a certain savoir faire, a lilt, a ring to it! One of my favorite baseball pastimes is to sit close enough to heckle the umpire and the opposing team, should they deserve it, which they always do.
Plus it reminds me of the old cartoon charecters Heckle and Jeckle.
Finally, it saddens me to think the only way dissent can be voiced nowadays is in a 30 second snippet, or however long it takes security to remove you.
