Mel Gibson arrested for DUI
Friday, July 28, 2006; Posted: 4:13 p.m. EDT (20:13 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actor and director Mel Gibson was arrested Friday in Malibu, California, and charged with driving under the influence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.

Gibson, 50, was pulled over early Friday while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. Officers on patrol reported Gibson was driving at an "excessively fast speed," he said.

He was charged with a misdemeanor and posted $5,000 bond, Whitmore said.

Gibson was not immediately available for comment.

All you have to do is look at his views on: women, choice, the Holocaust, other religions, gays, stem cell resaerch, etc.

He's antiu-war and doesn't like BUsh. Big deal. That doesn't make him a Liberal. Most of teh GOP in Congress are way more Progressive than Gibosn.

25. Pardon me, but why all this ridicule against Mel Gibson?
Edited on Fri Jul-28-06 04:45 PM by brentspeak
He is not some mindless Bush-bot whose hypocrisy has been exposed, unlike what people on this thread are saying. On issues that have religious meaning to him, like abortion and stem cell research, yes, he is on the right. But on all other political issues he's pretty much center-left. And he's against the Iraq War, even praising Michael Moore's film.

Sheesh. Things are not always black-and-white.

31. Yeah, I agree. He's an idiot, but he's his own idiot.
As religiously whacky as he is, he has expressed his discontent with the fascism he sees taking over this country, and word is that he is absolutely no fan of the current misadministration. He doesn't march to the beat of the current religiofascist drum.

And I think this arrest is sad. He needs help, and I hope he gets it.

I always have to cut Mel some slack because he is, after all, Mad Max, star of two of my favorite movies of all time.

This just doesn't make sense..

I'm sure he's heard the embryos are just that unfertilized
embryonic cells that are going to be discarded anyway.

Why in the world would he be against the healing power of those
cells helping someone who has been paralyzed, help them to walk again?

And so many other cures in the offing through stem cell research..

Sorry, I just don't get it..

No matter how much another poster liked working on a movie with him. Mel Gibson is a raving hypocritical,m anti-SEmtic, anti-gay, misogynistic, anti-any religion other than his nutty brand of Catholicism that isn't recognized. He is beyond anti-choice. Gibson is an extremist.

He even said his own wife would go to hell if she didn't convert. Ummm.... Catholics haven't held that as doctrine in a long time...

27. He Did - Here's One of His Quotes on Bush,
Edited on Fri Jul-28-06 04:40 PM by otohara
He supposedly backed down on Fahrenheit 9/11 due to GOP threats - see below. Also, this is from Wikipedia and as we all know Wikipedia sometimes gets things wrong.

Mel Gibson has never identified himself as being a conservative Republican, but he has been perceived as such to the point that The Washington Times called him one. He joined many of his colleagues in the entertainment industry in opposition to the Iraq War and praised the liberal director Michael Moore and his documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11, leading some to see him as a "real" (traditional) conservative in opposition to the neoconservative policies of the Bush administration and others to believing he leans toward a libertarian viewpoint. Gibson's Icon Productions was originally set to back Moore's film, but mysteriously backed out. Moore claimed in 2004, " got a call from top Republicans to tell Mel Gibson don’t expect to get more invitations to the White House." <17> In 2006 Gibson told Hotdog Magazine, a UK film magazine, that the "fear mongering" depicted in his film Apocalypto "reminds me a little of President Bush and his guys." <18> Many fans have perceived The Patriot (2000), We Were Soldiers (2001) and The Passion of the Christ (2004) as conservative movies.

And here I am -breaking my vow of silence again. :)

Why should I care what anyone writes about him? Because he really is a nice person - although quite 'human' and like most intelligent folks, cannot be summed up in a headline, a paragraph or a 30 year old interview. Also I like to think real Democrats are smarter than to make baseless declarations of 'fact'. It makes them look like Republicans.

FWIW, I got nabbed in Malibu in the 70's for a DUI. Took a habeus (sp.?) corpus to get out. The sherrif's station isn't the friendliest place for Democrats/movie folks.

39. a mel story-
the art teacher at my kid's grade school is married to a special effects guy. every year, the art club does what they call "masterpiece t-shirts" copies of great works painted on t-shirts. they auction them off to raise money for art supplies.
said husband always goes to said auction, and makes sure that no shirts go unsold. he has amassed quite a collection. he wears them to work all the time. he was doing a movie with mel, who repeatedly admired the shirts. (these kids do do some amazing painting.)
as it happened, the auction came along, so husband invited mel. he came in and dropped about $2k. gave a bunch of kids the thrill of a lifetime, also.

His beliefs and attitudes towards gays, women, religious people other than his bonkers "unCatholic" order (including hos own wife), his refusal to deny his father's extreme antisemitic views and holocaust denial screeds, his hypocrisy, etc.

Except for saying -- belatedly -- that he doesn't like Bush's Imperialism, Mel Gibson has never said much of anything to prove he isn't a Freeper.

I'm totally freaked out by drinking and driving. I've done it in the past (never caught), but never in the last 30 years. I totally quit that shit when I got hired at Piedmont Airlines. No drink in the world was worth the dream job I'd worked for so hard. We still went out and drank, but 522-3333 became a very important number in our world (Arlington, Va): Red Top Cab.

Given the posts in the DU Lounge, there are many potential DUIs among us. I hope DUers are smart, and only drink-and-post (as opposed to drink-and-drive).

Mel Gibson is an actor. He is an entertainer. He did a great job in interpreting Col. Hal Moore in "We Were Soldiers." Go to the LZ-Xray website and look at the old footage of Hal Moore, then watch Mel Gibson in "Soldiers."

Back to the pot. I'd put a nickle on that Mel has toked up before. Maybe not. But what does it matter to us? Why are we concerned over his DUI? Let the California courts deal with this infraction. Part of that deal should be a revocation of his driving license. God knows he can afford a driver for a while!

57. Mel can and will be a DU hero when he..
sees the light about the benefit of stem cells to humanity.
It's all fine for those of us who take walking freely for granted.

The late Chris Reeves and Michael J. Foxes of the world deserve a chance
to be themselves again. Chris tried really hard, so did Dana, to see
it come true for them. They, unfortunately ran out of time.

There is one consolation though, individual states
are finally allocating money for this research.
IMHO-it is money well spent.

What would Jesus do? Jesus would say, What is wrong with you people? Why would God create
this Earth and all of you and then abandon you to your own devices. He provided millions of
herbs for man to discover to cure disease. He provided man with a brain enhanced with the ability
to grow and learn every single day. What says Jesus is thinking, yes, you can use your
own genetic material to repair yourselves when suffering from serious debilitating pathology.
What took you so long to figure that one out?

58. Is Michael J. Fox a "late."
Didn't know that he, too, had died.

59. What is a had died?
Does that have something to do with a craze
colored coiffure? Or perhaps a cyclopean miscreant?

61. Hmmmm...
Chris Reeves passed away uncured and Michael J Fox is trying to avoid a similar
fate. IOW, he's one of the staunchest champions of stem cell research, as was Reeves.
If you think the grammatical part of my post is more important than the substance..
well, then..

I think it was a simple misunderstanding.

65. Gibson's Anti-Semitic Tirade
Gibson's Anti-Semitic Tirade -- Alleged Cover Up
Posted Jul 28th 2006 9:15PM by TMZ Staff

TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson went on a rampage when he was arrested Friday on suspicion of drunk driving, hurling religious epithets. TMZ has also learned that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department had the initial report doctored to keep the real story under wraps.

TMZ has four pages of the original report prepared by the arresting officer in the case, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy James Mee. According to the report, Gibson became agitated after he was stopped on Pacific Coast Highway and told he was to be detained for drunk driving Friday morning in Malibu. The actor began swearing uncontrollably. Gibson repeatedly said, "My life is f****d." Law enforcement sources say the deputy, worried that Gibson might become violent, told the actor that he was supposed to cuff him but would not, as long as Gibson cooperated. As the two stood next to the hood of the patrol car, the deputy asked Gibson to get inside. Deputy Mee then walked over to the passenger door and opened it. The report says Gibson then said, "I'm not going to get in your car," and bolted to his car. The deputy quickly subdued Gibson, cuffed him and put him inside the patrol car.

Once inside the car, a source directly connected with the case says Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me."

The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

The deputy became alarmed as Gibson's tirade escalated, and called ahead for a sergeant to meet them when they arrived at the station. When they arrived, a sergeant began videotaping Gibson, who noticed the camera and then said, "What the f*** do you think you're doing?"
