Bush Sees a Chance for Change to Sweep Mideast

WASHINGTON, July 28 — President Bush, vowing to turn conflict in the Middle East into a “moment of opportunity” for broader change, said today that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would be dispatched back to the region on Saturday with a plan for a multinational force that would help Lebanon’s army take over from Hezbollah in the southern part of the country.

Mr. Bush spoke this afternoon at a press conference with Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain, who called the conflict a “complete tragedy” with innocent Lebanese and Israeli lives lost, people displaced, and a “terrible setback” for Lebanon’s democracy.

Mr. Bush said that the “root cause” of the problem was Hezbollah.

“For the sake of long-term stability, we’ve got to deal with this issue now,” Mr. Bush said.

“This is a moment of intense conflict in the Middle East,” Mr. Bush said. “Yet our aim is to turn it into a moment of opportunity and a chance for broader change in the region.”

Broader change yes. Al qaida aligned with Hezbollah and competing to lead the way; Sunnis and Shiites potentially united in a jihad. Lebanon in rubble, rockets in Israel; the whole Arab and muslim world closer united in fury and outrage. Israel on full offensive and defensive. Arab governements sidelined and having to take second seat to Hezbollah which is already seen as victorious and heroic for having lasted this long. Neo-con policies on the march again. Rice a cold hearted failure. Bush spouting moral clarity and bubble boy fantasies having destroyed the US's moral authority and standing in the world. And peace as remote as its ever been. Broader change, yes. For the worse.

17. This is so friggin outrageous....
Lebanon was doing fine until this war broke out. They don't need an invasion from American troops to turn the country into "Iraq II: The Unraveling."

All Junior has to do is call a cease fire and use diplomacy to get the two sides to agree on stopping the killing. Putting US forces in there will only pour gasoline on the fire that is burning.

This is so outrageous. The American people cannot and MUST NOT stand for this.

What Junior is hoping for--is that the Arab world will unite against us--and they'll bring the death party into Lebanon. The fighting will commence, our soldiers will die in vain and pretty soon--the media will begin reporting that most of the foreign fighters are streaming in from Syria and Iran.

They'll be tons of fearmongering about Iran's nuclear capabilities and their refusal to "disarm." Pretty soon, we'll be in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Iran--and we'll be bombing the shine-ola out of the Middle East. Hundreds of thousands will be killed. The United States will have more enemies worldwide since the country began.

Junior is looking for a fight. He's using our soldiers as raw meat, and he's throwing them into the shark tank. When the feeding frenzy begins, he'll be able to justify the next step in the evil, sick PNAC plan.

It's beyond perverse.

22. This is about the fifteenth "chance for change" he's announced...
...and, in each case, it always involves taking a "hands-off" attitude and giving the Likud/pseudo-Likud Israeli government free rein to do whatever it wants, while blaming the whole thing on the particular Arab terrorists du jour.

And then acting surprised and disappointed when the only resulting "change" is the number of people (predominantly civilians) planted six feet under. :eyes:

24. I'm seeing something interesting going on diplomatically
CondiLIAR was to meet with Asian leaders this weekend, instead they told her to fuck off and go DO SOMETHING in the MidEast..

Now, if we can convince ALL Leaders to join hands and REFUSE to meet with Bush CO on anything until the US is FORCED to initiate a CeaseFire then we may have something going there..

Sort of like a Sit In, only by World Leaders.. for some reason, the Bush people are still scared of bad media attention, dunno why, since Karl Rove's fax machine glows cherry red and the Media rewrite the marching orders for their particular broadcast -- but there JUST MIGHT BE something to this, we need to promote this..

Tempted to get the word out, maybe with a website or a well written piece that NOW is the time for ALL world leaders to REFUSE to meet with Bush or any of his cronies UNLESS certain rules are abided by.

Sort of like if all the Democrats REFUSED to go on Television, the right wing would be sitting around arguing with itself and it would bore even Joe Sixpack fairly quick.

Someone needs to set the "reset" button on Bush, then the OFF switch, then back into the closet to gather dust.

Central Asia: U.S. Wary Of Shanghai Grouping
PRAGUE, July 27, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- A senior U.S. State Department official says the United States should not worry too much about any threat emerging from the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which comprises China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Steven Mann reassured members of Congress at a hearing in Washington on July 25 by a House of Representatives' international relations subcommittee that he does not view the SCO, which is dominated by China and Russia, as an emerging threat to Western interests."

33. Hey BHN! I've been keeping an eye out for news on the SCO. Seems
it's always in the "foreign" press. Notice how the US media just doesn't seem to ever report on it?
BWAHAHAHA! I'm surprised the damned dopes in Congress knew enough about it to ask - guess they don't all get their news from Faux afterall. Maybe it was Rummy's huff that tipped them off.

Her comments follow pointed remarks last month by U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that the United States should not be excluded from regional groupings, and he expressed surprise that Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad was invited to attend the SCO summit. The United States views Iran as a supporter of terrorism.

Mann acknowledged that the SCO had occasionally cut across U.S. interests; for instance, its 2005 summit called for Washington to set a timetable for the withdrawal of its military from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Uzbekistan subsequently asked the United States to leave, and Kyrgyzstan signed a deal with the United States greatly increasing the fees it receives for hosting U.S. forces.

39. We will have our 'moment of opportunity'
in a few months. Hopefully, we will also 'sweep' the republicans back to minority status where they belong.

As I look back, I see barely a mention of Afghanistan anymore, except for news that the Taliban is regaining strength. Iraq is in chaos with no end in sight. And now, we have Hezbollah as the 'root cause' of instability in the Middle East. I fear our clueless leader just wants to cut and run when he gets bored. He seems to enjoy it like someone trying on shoes until they find a pair they like. The death and destruction does not phase him. God, I hate him.

36. Response from the Arab press: FOAD, George
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 12:35 AM by onager
(I'm writing from Egypt, where I'm currently working.)

Editorial, Egyptian Gazette:

A New Middle East

The US has not learnt a lesson from the grim happenings of the past three years. It is unlikely to learn.

On rushing headlong into Iraq in March 2003, the US claimed it would democratize Iraq and turn it into a model for a new Middle East. Three years later, Iraq has become a major destabilizing factor in this volatile region, no small thanks to the American failings.

The mistake is compounded as Washington has thrown its full weight behind Israel's wanton attacks on Lebanon.

US Secretary Of State Condoleeza Rice has recently raised eyebrows by describing the destruction triggered by Israel on the Lebanese soil as a prelude to a new Middle East.

The US official has failed to explain how an incursion into a sovereign state can give rise to a new Middle East. Nor has she spelt out the shape of the new Middle East imagined by the US.

Drawing on the disappointing US experience in the region, one can safely conclude that Washington conceives of a Middle East where Israel would have the upper hand and reshape according to its agenda.

For more than two weeks, the Israeli war machine has been turning Lebanon into killing fields and rubble with American blessing.

Chaos is an inevitable result of this Israeli-US collusion, which fuels anti-Americanism across the region.
