The town of Chadron, Nebraska is on fire right now.
I just found this out on another site. Apparently brush wildfires have spread to this town.

Chadron has a population of around 5,600 people.

Here's a link with some breaking news:

1. partial evacuation
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 01:37 AM by Viva_La_Revolution
wow, this sucks.

from your link

"We have just found out the city of Chadron is being evacuated. If you read this, please tell anyone from the area that you know.

The report is that the southern third of Chadron is being evacuated due to increasing fire and smoke. The fire is slowly making its way into the town itself and there is an imminent danger.

If we receive anymore information on this, we will let you know as soon as possible."

on edit: watched the film, so far it's just the south part of town being evacuated.

3. I hate wildfires. Good luck to all involved.
Spent part of a summer beating out wildfires in western ND, using water soaked wool blankets. I hate the smell of burning grass and sage. Helped save a few homes though.

4. It's sad also, because there's a nice college there.
I'd hate to see what'll happen to the students who go there.

and came across this blog update on Chadron:

>>Strong Canyon Fire near Chadron, Neb.

After a tense night of fire activity, Chadron, Neb. residents were allowed to return home Saturday morning. Mayor John Gamby told local radio station KCSR that: “It’s been quite a night. But everyone in town can come back to their homes.”

About 1,500 residents were evacuated Friday night when the Strong Canyon Fire kicked up and spread. It started near the city dams about 3 miles south of town on Nebraska National Forest land. By about 8:30 p.m. Friday the fire had burned to the south edge of the Chadron State College campus near the Eagles football field. Power to areas of town were out for a time overnight.

Mayor Gamby did say areas south of town looked rough. Fire officials said some homes had been lost in the Hidden Valley area southeast of the Chadron city limits. With another hot, windy day on tap, fire officials were expecting extreme fire behavior throughout the day Saturday. Highs could reach 108. “It’s not going to take very long to move a long way,” one fire official said during a morning briefing from Chadron State College carried live on KCSR. Another fire official told teams working the fire to have patience fighting the fire Saturday. “The environment is very explosive,” he said.<<

edit to note: If anyone is monitoring the East Ridge fire, the blog is a good place to get ongoing information - also loaded with pics.

10. Yes, soup, the Journal's Wildfire blog is...
great. I check it several times a day during an active fire because it is the best way to get up to date news on fires in the area. Friday night the Eastridge fire went from 200 acres to 2000 overnight.

Things are looking a bit better this morning . This fire is about 15 miles from my house. I have many friends who live out in that area. I live right under the flight path of the slurry bombers, so when I'm home, I have an idea of how a fire is going based on their activity. We sure hope they can get this contained soon and before it jumps any more highways. That area has had several very big fires in the last few years of drought.

There is some video of the Eastridge fire linked from that blog.

14. My husband's sister lives there,
so this has been of particular interest to us. She lives on the bottom side of I-90, though, and wasn't/isn't in any danger since the wind was/is driving it away. Unfortunately, other people out in the area weren't that lucky.

Just checked the blog again and some of the evacuation orders are being lifted. Can't quite figure out if it's because they are getting it under control, or if it's because the fire line has moved on eastward. That picture taken from 'Patriot Homes' of the firetruck and houses in the foreground is so frightening.

Sending my best wishes to everyone in the area.
