Iran‘s high court approves death sentences

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran ‘s Supreme Court has confirmed death sentences for five Iranian Arab separatists convicted for bombings near the Iraqi border, state-run Iranian television reported Saturday.

The five men were originally indicted for the bombings in January this year and June and October 2005. Ahvaz is the capital of oil-rich Khuzestan, which borders Iraq in southwest Iran.

One of the defense lawyers, Mansour Atashaneh, said Saturday he had not received any official verdict. Earlier, semi-official news agency ISNA quoted a local judiciary official as saying the five had been sentenced to hang.
