Breaking: Rice to return to D.C.

Rice to return to D.C., bypassing Beirut By KATHERINE SHRADER, Associated Press Writer

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is abruptly breaking off her diplomatic mission in the Mideast and returning to Washington after Israel's deadly attack on a Lebanese village, a U.S. official said Sunday. Rice, who planned to head back to the United States on Monday morning, had hoped to leave the region after concrete progress on ending the fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon. But her work was hampered severely by Israel's missile strike early Sunday that killed more than 50 people, including many children.

The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity about the diplomatic situation, said Rice would work from Washington on a U.N. Security Council resolution to end the crisis.

--snip--
"We are also pushing for an urgent end to the current hostilities, but the views of the parties on how to achieve this are different," Rice said.

Olmert expressed "great sorrow" for the airstrikes but blamed Hezbollah guerrillas for using the area to launch rockets at Israel.

1. what is this "urgent end" shit?
How is a normal end any different from an urgent one?
And does she forget that she and Boy George have the absolute power to stop Israel? Just cut off their funds and their arms.

117. The United States is in a war against...
...terror. Hezbollah are terrorists and they started it. Israel has joined the war on terror. Of course the US will drag feet on a cease fire.

Can't you just see the conspiracy and intrigue as if it were all part of a suspense movie? Read between the lines.

80. Surely more than 2 more years of this, Dems have been silent
signifying their lack of courage and willingness to seek anything outside of the "box" that box being unconditional support for anything Israel does and fear of even suggesting that Hamas or Hezbollah be negotiated with. Things will change there and our standing will change when and if US becomes an honest broker.

5. All Bush has to do is call Olmert on the phone and the bombing will stop
The US can also stop arms and jet fuel shipments to Israel if Olmert does not comply with a request for a ceasefire.

Hard for Bush to ask for a ceasefire when he approved of the bombing of Lebanon in the first place.

10. You are so right, all of this would stop with just a phone call...
from Bush to Olmert. This is another case of Bush, Rice and company putting on a dramatic show when all that is needed is a phone call. They obviously don't want to make the call so the carnage will continue.

They won't even meet with her until she stops acting as an agent for the Israeli government. The US is not seen as an honest broker, and quite rightly.

11. Remember Blair saying she "must succeed"
She has now failed twice, and is no longer welcome in Lebanon. Repeat: the Secretary of State of the United States of America is not welcome in Lebanon; the Lebanese government essentially told her to beat sand. This is an astounding development.

So, we go from Blair saying that she MUST succeed in her efforts, to Rice not even being entertained by one of the parties involved. Can Rice be any more of a failure?

In her duties as National Security Advisor, she allows one of the most devastating attacks on US soil.
In her duties as Secretary of State, she becomes persona non grata in Lebanon.

She is incompetent, and would be fired immediately by any sane administration.

Good. She was apparantly going to go to Beirut before she was "disinvited" by the Lebanese government. 38. Lebanon's PM thanks Hizbollah for its 'sacrifices'
So much for that plan where the people of Lebanon would turn against Hezbollah.

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1044557

BEIRUT: Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora thanked Hizbollah on Sunday for its "sacrifices" in its war against Israel.

"We are in a strong position and I thank the Sayyed for his efforts," Siniora said when asked about a Saturday statement by Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah calling on the government to take advantage of Hizbollah's steadfastness against Israeli military might.

snip>

Siniora, a member of Lebanon's anti-Syrian coalition, has often been at odds with the Syrian-backed Hizbollah but the 19-day-old conflict appears to have brought the two sides closer together.

bit more...

So begins Act II

The first step toward ANY solution is a cease-fire. Barring that, the whole region is fucked.

As I said, at least for me, THIS is the defining diplomatic moment between the U.S. and Israel. But I don't think we'll hear any criticism any time soon. Last I heard, the U.S. is still singing the "caution and restraint" aria.

Despite MSM and Cable efforts to promote the israeli lies about the murder of 37 kids, most of america is pissed as hell. They can sense that Israel is fucking up WITH US approval.

Unfortuunately, both sides of the aisle have been bought, paid for and totally subjugated by AIPAC and other pro-Israel lobby groups. The chance of Congress reflecting the will of the people, AND for them to stand up to israel and say "STOP. NOW!" are as good as my chances to win the lotto.

This will not change until we change our congress. And during that time, the rest of the missle east will suffer the hubris, incompetance, and worse of Israeli policies joined at the hip with a neocon administration.

Stymied in her diplomatic mission and rocked by an Israeli bombing gone awry, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice consulted Israelis in a tense atmosphere Sunday and planned to head home Monday.

Rice had hoped to leave the region after concrete progress on ending the fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon. But her work was hampered severely by Israel's missile strike early Sunday that killed more than 50 people, including many children.

53. The neo-cons are quiet........their leaders failed.
And after bashing the UN all week long, they suddenly see another corner turned by the adm.

<snip> A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity about the diplomatic situation, said Rice would work from Washington to complete a U.N. Security Council resolution to end the crisis.

Now we'll hear how they think this should stop.........too bad it took 34 more kids being killed to get their attention.

65. Failure??? Man, Are WE Freakin' Asleep at The Wheel Or WHAT.
It's a bit too soon to be referring to the neo-cons as failures, my friend. As we speak they're attempting to goose Israel to invade Syria.

The Bush Administration WANTS THIS THING TO ESCALATE!! And, guess what? IT IS.

They do not see their intractability as a part of the problem. They see themselves as the last line protecting society from the chaos and destruction of so-called terrorists. They see war as the answer.

Didn't ANYONE hear Condi talk about "birth pangs" of a "new Middle East" and how we would "prevail?"

That is the rhetoric of a greater conflagration, not the concillatory language of someone who is ready to compromise.

And I have seen no evidence that anybody or any country or any international body, can stop the neo-cons from continuing on their regional war-making path.

I sure wish we would wake up.

They are not going to let 30 dead kids stop them.

Who is going to speak out against the neo-con's designs, that's what I want to know. Everywhere I turn I see Hillary Clinton-types or Joe Lieberman-types defending the policies that America is implementing in the Middle East.

I actually find myself missing Jimmy Carter these days. Where the hell has he been? Probably building a house somewhere in Beirut...

How can we ramp up to such a bloodthirsty state in just five years? Is this what the outrage of 9/11/01 has wrought? When are we going to become exhausted by our rage?

seems that Condi's mission was to get Hezbollah to commit suicide, and if they refused, to insure the process was dragged out long enough for Israel to continue its offensive for as long as they wished. Sounds like "mission accomplished" to me.

Not that she was of much use over there, anyway.

A cease-fire is the only logical first step here. I found it very sad that everyone had all these grandiose plans for bringing peace to the region this past week, but yet nobody could agree that the first, logical step would be a cease-fire.

92. Rice breaks off Mideast trip, heads to D.C.
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 02:35 PM by uppityperson
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14101886/
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is abruptly breaking off her diplomatic mission in the Mideast and returning to Washington after Israel’s deadly attack on a Lebanese village, a U.S. official said Sunday.

Rice, who planned to head back to the United States on Monday morning, had hoped to leave the region after concrete progress on ending the fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon. But her work was hampered severely by Israel’s missile strike early Sunday that killed more than 50 people, including many children.

The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity about the diplomatic situation, said Rice would work from Washington on a U.N. Security Council resolution to end the crisis. ...
(clip)

...“Emotions are understandably running high on all sides,” she said.

Re-edited to add that acording to most other media reports, Lebanon told her to not come. MSM at its best, spin spin spin.

95. Is this after what was reported on the morning talk shows and news?
They were reporting this AM that she would be staying behind to do everything she could to help the situation. We all know that the only help she would provide would be to throw gasoline on the fire.

My point here is, if this is a change from this morning, then to me it looks like they made that statement this AM just to get the headlines for the Sunday morning news, then the real Kindasleazy shows herself and heads somewhere to buy some shoes.
