UN Security Council to meet for Lebanon talks (today)
The United Nations Security Council will meet at 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) on Sunday for consultations on the Lebanon-Israel conflict at the request of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the UN said in a statement.

The statement followed an Israeli airstrike on Lebanon that killed 54 civilians, fueling world pressure for a cease-fire .

1. an exercise in futility, no doubt...
...anything the Security Council decides, should it be able to decide anything over US objections, will be vetoed by the US as a matter of course. The only value in this will be to demonstrate (for the Nth time) just how far the US is "outside the mainstream" of world opinion; one more sledge-hammer whack of the wedge that separates US from civilized society.

2. France is going to introduce a resolution for immediate ceasefire
We can expect Bolton to veto this one as well.

UN to hold Lebanon crisis talks

The UN Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting on the Middle East crisis after the deaths of more than 54 Lebanese civilians in an Israeli raid.

The session, scheduled for 1500GMT on Sunday, was announced as France circulated a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

US officials said the secretary of state would return from Israel to the US on Monday to work on a resolution.

The strike on the southern village of Qana is the deadliest so far.

Israel's YNet web site quoted him as telling Rice the army needed another 10 to 14 days to press its offensive.

I wish someone could convince them to call for a ceasefire

4. I hope they force the issue and make the US look bad if it vetoes it.

5. After Bolton vetoes the new resolution, how many Democrats will vote for
his nomination as permanent UN ambassador? How many will filibuster Bolton's nomination?
