ThE four-year ceasefire between Sri Lanka’s government and the Tamil Tiger rebels looks to be dead in all but name, peacekeepers said yesterday.
Yesterday, in a fourth day of low-intensity battle, Sri Lankan air force jets killed eight Tamil Tiger fighters and injured several others in aerial bombings, in a bid to wrest back control of a reservoir in the east of the country.
The jets raided the eastern districts of Batticaloa and Trincomalee in an effort to clear access to a sluice gate, which the government accuses the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of blocking in order to choke water supplies to farmers on government land.
