Bush* to Call Soldiers on Thanksgiving (Phoning it in)
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 09:45 PM by kskiska
While Hillary will be dining with the soldiers, * is at his comfy ranch on the phone.

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush (news - web sites) will spend part of his Thanksgiving Day calling soldiers to express his and the nation's gratitude for their service in Iraq (news - web sites).

A senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Bush would call "a number of" soldiers. The official did not provide specifics, but at least one of the intended recipients of the president's personal thanks is recovering in Germany from injuries suffered in the Iraq war.

(snip)

But — reflecting the difficulty of balancing the desire to honor all the dead equally with the need to not appear to be trying to distance himself from the bad news — he has also often chosen not to comment on specific deadly incidents, and has not attended any of the funerals.

(snip)

The president's twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna, are visiting for the holiday, as are his parents, former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara.

On the table was to be a free-range turkey, turkey cornbread dressing, chipotle sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, asparagus and a salad of Texas grapefruit, toasted walnuts and greens, White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan reported Wednesday. Alongside the "Prairie Chapel pecan pie" would be another classic dessert: pumpkin pie, she said.

5. "A number of soliders" probably means two.
The guy in Germany is probably comatose. They'll put a phone up to his ear and let the jackass in Crawford jabber away
as part of a photo op. The other guy is probably too injured to respond also. The WH couldn't risk some majorly pissed off soldier thousands of miles from home on Thanksgiving telling the chimp what he really thinks of him. As for the dinner menu, too bad no one thought to include a pretzel.

16. One is a number also, but since the soldiers
plural it must be two.

Those soldiers will be very well vetted, and have guns to their heads. Taking that call if you have a real opinion about the war would be very risky business.

9. I wonder what
he will call them? This poor excuse for a human is some piece of mucin. On my way home from work I found myself wondering how many people will not be on earth this Thanksgiving day cuz of Bush. 10,000 Iraqi people to start out the body count. I keep thinking about Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" and I know that last year I went to bed Christmas Eve and wondered how sweet it would be to wake up and find that a miracle occurred while I slept. And then I thought, how pathetic is it that this is how I am seeing the world. Wishing for miracles.

17. what was the "number" of soldiers they
had to screen and vet before they found some that WOULD talk to the turkey?

just wondering - but during the phone calls will the other soldiers in the room be required to give standing ovations?

14. And why isn't Cheney visiting troops in Iraq? He's the stringpuller
and ought to be held accountable for this mess he has gotten us into. It's not as if we believe this was all W's idea, is it?

And it's too bad the soldiers can't respond to their orders to go to Iraq saying.."hey, can't be there myself, but I'll call ya, okay?"

15. No one calls it "Texas" grapefruit
In Texas, and everywhere else, we just call it GRAPEFRUIT, for f$ck's sake. They gotta keep ramming that phony "Texas cowboy" image at us at every possible opportunity, don't they?
