Gunmen Fire on Street Sweepers in Baghdad
Gunmen Fire on Street Sweepers in Baghdad
The Associated Press
By QAIS AL-BASHIR
July 31, 2006

Gunmen opened fire on municipal street sweepers in Iraq's capital on Monday, killing one and injuring two, while a senior intelligence official died in a drive-by shooting.

Also Monday, gunmen wearing military fatigues kidnapped 25 employees and customers from a mobile phone store in the main shopping area of the capital, Baghdad, police said.

The gun-wielding kidnappers barged into the shop around noon and bundled the staff and employees into 15 cars they had arrived in, said police Lt. Thair Mahmoud. The whole operation lasted 10 minutes, he said.

The identity of the gunmen, who were wearing military uniforms, was not immediately known, said Mahmoud. No other details were available.

3. Safer than Detroit, DC! Yay!
Because it is quite common for gunmen to kidnap all the employees and whatever customers happen to be in a phone store in the main shopping area of Detroit, yeah?

5. Intelligence chief gunned down as violence sweeps across Iraq
A SENIOR intelligence official has been shot dead in the latest wave of violence to hit Iraq.

Gunmen also opened fire on street sweepers while 25 people were kidnapped from a Baghdad mobile phone store.

Today's killings came a day after five people, including four policemen and a lawyer, were ordered out of their car in northern Iraq and beheaded.

Earlier today police discovered three bullet-riddled bodies, two of whom had their hands and feet tied, while the third showed signs of torture. Elsewhere in the country, four roadside bombs and two car bombs exploded injuring 11 people.

6. Street sweepers? STREET SWEEPERS!!! OK, this is THE
... most insane thing I've heard yet, and I follow the news pretty close.

I can ALMOST understand kidnapping the cell phone store people, cell phones are annoying. (sarcasm.) But when people decide that they're willing to kill to keep their streets filthy, we just need to get the hell out and wish them all luck.
