Police have blocked off most of the area around 14th Street and Peachtree Street in midtown.

Authorities have evacuated the Proscenium building after someone found a suspicious package on the 22nd floor of the building just after 10 a.m. Monday.

Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington says the device appears to be an explosive device. A bomb sqaud robot retrieved the device and investigators are examining it.

A fire broke out at the same building last week, also forcing an evacuation.

A bomb-retrieving robot has come into contact with a suspicious device found on the 22nd floor of a Midtown Atlanta office building at 1170 Peachtree Street. A maintenance worker found the device that officials said resembled sticks of dynamite about 10 a.m. Monday inside a vacant office.

"At that time, he immediately called the Atlanta Police Department. My bomb squad unit responded to that location," Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington said during an early afternoon news conference carried live on 11Alive News. Pennington repeatedly referred to the item as an "explosive device" but added that "we won't know until our bomb squad calls us back to tell us exactly what the device contains."

Police quickly set up a command center outside The Proscenium building at 14th and Peachtree streets in Atlanta as SWAT teams, ATF and Homeland Security officials rushed to the scene. Officials evacuated The Proscenium and then positioned the robot on the 22nd floor to check out and retrieve the device and other evidence.

Captain Byron Kennedy of the Atlanta Fire Department said the same floor where the package was found had a minor fire last week that was determined to be electrical in nature. The fire may be reinvestigated to see if it is connected to the explosive left inside the office vacated since the blaze there last Thursday. The 22nd floor houses an advertising agency, 11Alive's Valerie Hoff reported on 11Alive News at Noon.

9. Does anyone else remember when these things were called 'bomb'

threats instead of 'terror' threats? I used to work for a little company called IBM and had to evacuate several corporate buildings over the years because of 'bomb' threats.

12. Yes, I remember taking a bomb threat

when I had a summer job refunding traveler's checks for American Express (building #7 that collapsed last in the WTC attack) in Manhattan. While I made the report to my supervisor I was unplugged from my telephone. I drifted over to the windows to look out and saw that THE WHOLE BUILDING (except for our floor--refunding Traveler's Checks) had been evacuated and people were flooding out onto the street below. I didn't last long after that...if everyone else was getting out, so was I.
