NYT: G.I. Crime Photos May Be Evidence
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/05/world/middleeast/05abuse.html?hp&ex=1154750400&en=815d8ccd0c7f0a28&ei=5094&partner=homepage

On March 13, a group of American soldiers sitting at a checkpoint south of Baghdad were asked to look into a horrible crime: a 14-year-old Iraqi girl had been raped, then killed along with her family in their house nearby in Mahmudiya.

The soldiers knew the house. They had been there only the day before, military prosecutors now say, committing the crime.

Those soldiers, along with others from their checkpoint, walked over and took detailed forensic photographs of the charred and bullet-riddled bodies, as if it were a routine investigation of an insurgent attack, according to a defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Now, those photographs are likely to serve as evidence in the military’s prosecution of the case, which opens a new chapter tomorrow when an Article 32 hearing, the rough equivalent of a grand jury proceeding, begins in Baghdad for five soldiers accused in the crime.

2. The ground is layed to find these soldiers acted correctly
in the performance of their "duty". I'm sorry; I can't support the troops any more. Flame away; I just can't.

6. There is something in the training which takes away respect
for human life. They may be doing their "duty" but they do it with a zest that, honestly, makes me ill.

7. These are human beings taught to act on their worst and most
vicious instincts. Otherwise, they could not perform their "job". But you're right; we all have it in us I'm sure.

I like seeing an accent here. I haven't read your posts before. Hiya!

9. Well, you guessed it. I am not a man.
And I think Impeachment is too good for the Pretzel. In my heart I wish for something more painful in all respects. Awful, no?

12. It's a failure of leadership. It's a failure of training.
As well as a lack of character and morals...

14. And there is no escape from this failure
because one, we need animals to perfom these duties, and two, we are unable to recruit gifted and thoughtful persons given the current conditions, our "Commander" in Chimp, and the general unwillingness to offer sacrifice for it's own sake and not for the sake of money or escape. We are screwed.

13. Abeer
Abeer is the name of the 14 year old girl that was raped, murdered, body set on fire, and whose family was murdered so that there would be no witnesses.

I just needed to say that. Her name is Abeer.

15. Tears in my eyes.
I have a fifteen year old daughter. There is no understanding these men, beyond understanding that they have been trained to be beasts, and to revel in it.

16. My grandchildren are 5,3, and 1
When I see photos come out of these war zones my heart breaks, and I think that could be one of my babies.

Abeer was just a girl, an Iraqi girl, trying to live in a war zone/occupation--whatever--it's all madness. My heart breaks for all of those just trying to live in such conditions. I don't know the names of the other thousands who have died in such a horrible manner, but I know the name of Abeer.
