Tigers kill 100 refugees, Sri Lanka says, amid new moves to halt bloodshed

COLOMBO (AFP) - Tiger rebels massacred at least 100 refugees in northeastern Sri Lanka, raising to 426 the number of people killed in 11 days of violence, the defence ministry has said amid fresh moves to end the bloodshed.

The ministry said in a statement Saturday the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) blocked civilians, mainly Muslims, fleeing the town of Muttur and killed at least 100 of them Friday night.

There was no immediate reaction from the Tigers to the ministry claim which came as Muslim legislators accused the guerrillas of holding over 100 Muslim civilians who had tried to escape the fighting in Muttur.

However, the official count of the fatalities has now risen to 426 with the 100 civilian victims.

They're deliberately targeting civilians!

Oh wait, they aren't Jews. Never mind. :boring:

5. Empty insults. Of course these are atrocities and war crimes
If you haven't noticed the Tamils have a long history of terrorism and assassination. Maybe a lot of people haven't noticed, but some of us have.

Pointing an accusing finger at everyone else like this shouldn't be treated as the bloody outrage it is, well, I have no use for it. Yes, some people actually care when people not killed by Jews are killed in this world. Get used to it.

Sri Lankan town deserted and devastated by battle

MUTUR, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - After days of heavy fighting in this eastern town, jumpy Sri Lankan soldiers are almost the only signs of life on streets littered with fallen power lines, spent cartridges and dead animals.

Mutur has been abandoned by most of its people. Tamil Tiger rebels say they will halt an offensive and the army says violence is abating, but intermittent artillery and small-arms fire still echo across the town.

On the beach, the damage from the fighting has added to devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami. Wooden temporary shelters for the tsunami victims stand splintered.

"There was very serious fighting," said an officer from the elite Commando regiment. "But I think we've pushed them back. I think the town is now safe."

But small-arms fire and explosions from mortars and government artillery still hitting nearby Tiger targets could be heard on Saturday.

Most houses still stand but many are damaged. Near the temporary headquarters of the naval infantry in a damaged building near the jetty, a dead cow lay in a deserted garden.

On a walk through the town with the Commandos, Reuters saw only three civilians amid the debris.

Thousands fled Mutur on Friday, complaining that both sides had been shelling the town and that life had become impossible. Most are now in camps or staying with relatives.
