Exclusive: Iraq—Plans in Case of a Civil War

Aug. 14, 2006 issue - The Bush administration insists Iraq is a long way from civil war, but the contingency planning has already begun inside the White House and the Pentagon. President Bush will move U.S. troops out of Iraq if the country descends into civil war, according to one senior Bush aide who declined to be named while talking about internal strategy. "If there's a full-blown civil war, the president isn't going to allow our forces to be caught in the crossfire," the aide said. "But institutionally, the government of Iraq isn't breaking down. It's still a unity government." Bush's position on a pullout of U.S. troops emerged in response to news-week's questions about Sen. John Warner, chairman of the Armed Services Committee. Warner warned last week that the president might require a new vote from Congress to allow troops to stay in Iraq in what he called "all-out civil war." But the senior Bush aide said the White House would need no prompting from Congress to get troops out "if the Iraqi government broke down completely along sectarian lines."

1. "The pResident doesn't give a shit about the troops," an aide said
"But he isn't going to let the chance that the GOP can retain at least one house of Congress in the upcoming elections and scuttle any investigations or impeachment proceedings be caught in the crossfire."

4. I'm Sure Bush Has Planned the Civil War
simply by not planning anything Reality based.

I find this report highly unlikely. Bush cuts and runs and he might as well leave the country for good.

5. Well, Bush *is* leaving the country for good
soon, maybe a massive troop withdrawal in Oct. will be used to salvage a few house/senate seats. I don't think it would work, but if nothing else is working...

8. republicon plan: jack up oil prices some more, reap BIGGER profits
while screwing the bejabbers out of the average working American citizen; laugh all the way to the bank with other republicon oil cronies;

Bush's plan: steady as she goes; continue to ignore the deaths and funerals of U.S. service men and women; maintain record of not having attended one funeral or memorial service yet after sending troops off to an oil war based on massive WMD lies and propaganda.

10. The Iraqi population seems to be ready for the Occupation
to end now. All it will take if for al Sistani to declare a Fatwa against the US/UK Occupation and the Shi'ites will drive the US/UK out. More slaughter in Lebenon may just be the tipping point. The Iraqis know that the US is backing Israel in the brutal devestation of Lebenon.

11. Note the squirlly definition of "all out civil war":
"if the Iraqi government broke down completely along sectarian lines."
In other words, the only thing that defines civil war is what a few politicos do inside the green zone. How the raging civil war outside the green zone affects our troops does not matter.

12. See, there's this guy in Basra
They're not quite sure if he's Sunni or Shia. As long has he's not killed or throwing a bomb, there is not an all out civil war with the Iraqi government breaking down completely along sectarian lines. As long as Mahmoud doesn't snap, Iraq is not in a civil war. See?

Actually, I have come into possession (never mind how) of the Bush Administration's complete, comprehensive and detailed plan should Iraq degenerate into all out civil war:

1. Blame the Democrats.

Our troops do not matter to *. Only having a forward base for their Dominionist, imperialist quest to dominate the world's resources.

13. What a bunch of lies.
Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 08:48 AM by tabasco
The Bush corporate cabal will NEVER unass Iraq.

This is simply propaganda, from "one senior Bush aide who declined to be named."

They sent our troops into Iraq for one reason - corporate profits - - and they will not let go easily of their goose that lays golden eggs.

16. ONE recommend for this?
Is your recommending finger broken?

I guess if this story is true it will be reported a few more times.

It's important.

This is the first report that Bush would cut and run before total victory is achieved.
